Why I Love Cycling: The People of La Redoute

Photos by Mark Johnson

138 clicks into Liège-Bastogne-Liège’s 160 miles, La Redoute lies in wait all year until, one April afternoon, she springs like a cat burglar from the verdant Belgian Ardennes and whacks ‘em. Focusing, as it does, all the sprawling drama of European pro cycling onto a paved slip of tractor path, La Redoute is sheer cycling spectacle. For me and the millions of fans who have watched this race over its storied 100 years, that Belgian hill symbolizes why we love racing the bike. These are some of the people who witnessed the battle of La Redoute in 2004.
