Young Guns: Baby Giro 2006 - Stage 1

The 35th Giro d'Italia Under 26, better known as the "Baby Giro", or just as the young gun version of Italy's GT, with past winners such as Moser, Ugrumov, Casagrande, Belli, Pantani, Simoni, Di Luca et al., got underway in the Campania region of southern Italy Friday, with a challenging ITT of about 8.5 km. from San Belvedere del Leucio to Caserta town, and close to 180 riders - belonging in a record number of some 30 teams (one rider from Italy, and one from Belgium racing for RC Pesant of Ličge, weren't allowed to start as they failed the blood tests carried out on about half of the peloton early in the morning) - in attendance.

The event got off to a surprise start, with the Italian Devid Garbelli (Caneva Concrete-San Marco) setting the fastest time at the finish line, and getting the win (and the first Maglia Rosa) by four seconds over the race "superstar" Dimitry Grabovskyy (Finauto Sport-Team Casini) of Ukraine. The recent winner of Italy's other top stage race on the young gun scene (the "Giro delle Regioni"), whose latest showdowns resulted in more than one cycling onlooker drawing comparisons between the boy and the "young gun" version of Jan Ullrich (their respective "winning ways" are quite similar indeed: both are great rouleurs, but might have a rough time on the steepest slopes) keeps his status of main suspect to finish atop the eventual podium intact, but today he had to give up to the mighty legs of Lombardy's Garbelli, who took his season tally up to four. Dario Cataldo (MCS-Bedogni) secured the remaining top three place at 15" behind the winner. OZ's Shaun Higgerson was the top non-Italian finisher, and another Aussie, Matthew Goss, also made the top 10 in the challenge against the clock.

"I worked hard to prepare for this ITT Prologue. But nonetheless, mainly because of some allergy problems I had in the past few days, this victory came as a surprise to me. I know that it will not be easy for me to hold onto the jersey I captured today, but I'll do my best to honor it" happy Garbelli said in after-race talks. "First loser" Dimitro Grabovskyy sounded quite disappointed with his second place finish instead "Today's course was a bit too tough for my abilities, but I'm confident about the next stages because my form is good".

The "Baby Girini" are back in the saddle Saturday with a 134-km. effort from the Caserta province hamlet going under the name of Maddaloni to San Bartolomeo in Galdo, containing a few climbs with the potential to cause some damage to the bunch, the ascent coming with 20k from the line in particular.
