30th Giro del Trentino stage 1
Luca Mazzanti of Ceramiche Panaria sprints to win the first stage. Eddy Ratti
and "The Kid" Cunego followed in this warm up for the Giro d' Italia.

Luca Mazzanti (Ceramiche Panaria) won the 1st stage in the Giro del Trentino
in a sprint with a group of 5. Naturino rider Eddy Ratti was 2nd, Il Piccolo
Principe or "the kid" Cunego finished in 3rd spot. The stage was 162,8 km long
in distance and brought the riders from Arco to Castello Tesino with a difficult
climb of about 10 km in the last 15 km of the race.
The stage included the major difficulties of the 2nd Categorie Climbs Vigolo
Vattaro at 117 kms. and Passo Forcella at 158.2 kms.
The race was animated by an early breakaway of 3 riders. These 3: Giaro
Ermeti (Team LPR), Raivis Belohvosciks (Universal Caffé) and Micula de Matteis (Tenax).
There maximum lead was about 3.25 but due to the hard work of teams like Lampre
and Panaria the 3 where caught on the last climb the Passo Forcella.
Emanuela Sella (Panaria) and Andrea Tonti (Acqua & Sapone) attacked on the climb
and Tonti took the KOM points ahead of Sella. In the descent only 3 riders made
it to the front with Cunego, Ratti and stage winner Mazzanti.
An other fact was that there was a crash on the climb with Pellizotti (Liquigas),
Wegelius (Liquigas), Nocentini (Acqua & Sapone) and Simoni (Saunier) involved in
it.
But all riders went on and finished the stage in the top 25. Also remarkably,
was the ride of José Rujano (Colombia Selle-Italia) he forced the tempo on the
climb but lost 15 sec. at the finish. But considering it’s his 2nd race of the
season, after solving the arguments with team manager Gianni Savio, it’s a good
sign with an eye on the coming Giro D’Italia.
Tomorrows stage from Castello Tesino to Cles a test of 174.8 kms.
featuring the Mountain Points on the 1rst Categorie Forcella di Brez at 134
kilometres into the race and a long descent after the Forcella to the ascent of
the Ronzone climb with 25 kms to the finish to sort out the riders. As the
finish is approached the last 9 kms provide one last opportunity for the
survivors to create some pain for their fellow riders on the uphill finish in
Cles features
