47th GP de Denain

Cofidis rider Jimmy Casper has won the 47th edition of the GP de Denain, his second consecutive victory here. Before the last sector of pavé with 2000m left, the Frenchman jumped across to Nico Mattan, a Gent-Wevelgem winner no less, who had attacked a couple of kilometres earlier. The pair held off the peloton before sprinting for victory between themselves. Unsurprisingly, it was Casper, a noted fast man, who beat his more experienced rival for a second win on the trot here, and his first of 2006. Hans Dekkers (Agritubel) won the bunch sprint ahead of Ag2r Prevoyance pair Putsep and Mondory, five seconds back. Meanwhile, Lilian Jegou put more light between himself and Chris Sutton in the Coupe de France standings, after finishing ninth, whereas his Australian rival could only manage eleventh.

Out of the six Coupe de France rounds raced so far, Cofidis have won four of them. That level of control is pretty impressive in itself, without considering that four different riders have won them: Bertagnolli (Tour du Haut Var), Coyot (Classic Haribo), Sutton (GP Cholet) and now Casper. However, out of those, only Sutton has won more points to stake his claim to overall victory in the season-long competition. The next round of the Coupe will be the tough Tro Bro Leon, run over gravel roads.
