Klier "all fired-up" for Flanders
Andreas Klier spearheads a highly-competitive roster of classics
specialists at Sunday's Tour of Flanders.
Klier, who lives and trains in
Flanders, was runner-up to Tom Boonen at last year's 'Ronde' and the
30-year-old is fit and raring to start again. "I am all fired-up for Flanders," says
the 30-year-old, who is convinced that he has the perfect team to support his bid
for victory in Meerbeke.
That back-up team includes T-Mobile stalwart and former Tour of
Flanders winner Steffen Wesemann, who certainly has the race knowledge to
support Klier over the 17 punchy climbs and countless cobbled passages. The team has the strength in depth to control the race - last
year T-Mobile placed three riders in the top ten; Klier (2nd), Erik Zabel
(4th) and Russian Champion Sergey Ivanov (9th). Zabel has moved on, but sporting
director
Valerio Piva remains convinced that "our team has shown that we
have what it takes to win this cycling monument”.
"Flanders's most beautiful"
Of course Flanders is no ordinary race and the Flems are no
ordinary cycling public - team manager Olaf Ludwig has only fond memories of his
time as a competitor at Vlaanderens mooiste, or "Flanders's most
beautiful": "Flanders is to the Belgians, what the football World Cup is to the
Germans," says the ex-sprinter, who expects another "day of festivities for the
region’s cycling mad fans".
On the sporting front, Valerio Piva believes that Ivanov and
Lorenzo Bernucci can be Klier's key men in the race's crucial final
stages. Bernucci's return is a real boost to the team - flu forced the Italian to
scratch Milan-Sanremo a fortnight ago.
"Lorenzo is very important to our tactics, he can be a huge help
to Andreas in the closing stages," says Piva, who also points to the good
form of Stephan Schreck, Bram Schmitz and Marcus Burghardt. "Marcus was
solid at the Dwars Door Flanderen, and Bram is competitive again after
fighting back bravely from his close season injury." Sprinter André Greipel rounds out the T-Mobile roster.
The 2006 ‘Ronde’ promises to be an exciting race, as always. 200
cyclist from 25 teams will tackle the winding 258km route, the cobbles,
the mud and the tricky climbs. It is cycling at its hardest, fast and
furious, and no place for the faint-hearted. Valerio Piva picks out crowd fave Tom Boonen
as the man to beat; The Flemish superstar is in top shape, having bagged
his third E3-Prize Flanders win on the trot last weekend, and he will have
top men at his side like Milan-Sanremo winner Filippo Pozzato.
"Quick Step are incredibly strong at the moment," says Piva, but
he won’t be defining the team tactics around the Belgian’s: "We are going to
try to ride our own race."

CSC
Sunderland, "We are Ready"
When Tour of Flanders kicks off on Sunday at 9.40AM on the market place in
Brugge, eight top motivated Team CSC riders roll out to fight for a big result.
Team CSC's Australian sports director, Scott Sunderland has no doubts: the team
is ready to battle for the victory in the Flemish classic.
”We have a handful of riders on top form, and considering the previous cobble
stone races, we know we're strong all round. Of course it appears that Tom
Boonen is in a league of his own, and he'll probably be the rider everyone will
be watching. We don't have any actual favorites, but we do have several
potentials. Karsten Kroon, Marcus Ljungqvist, Kurt-Asle Arvesen and Fabian
Cancellara are all in great shape right now, and they're very keen to sit up
front on Sunday. I think our results lately justify a certain amount of
optimism. In my opinion we have a very real chance of a victory,” comments Scott
Sunderland about Team CSC's chances in the 258-kilometer Tour of Flanders.
The peloton has to climb 17 of the so called cobble stone walls – with
Bosberg as the final one about 12 kilometers before the finish in the 90th
edition of the race.
”Anything can happen in a race like Tour of Flanders, but one thing is for
sure: only the strong survive. The finish is very tough and it will definitely
be a great race to watch. The route is identical to last year's and we know it
well, because it's extremely important to know every single turn. We have been
out training on some of the strategic spots to refresh our memories, and also to
make sure the riders are familiar with the route. We've done absolutely
everything in our power to be ready so now we'll have to wait and see what
happens on Sunday. Personally I think we'll go far,” Sunderland adds.
Cancellara in 2005 made a good showing in the Classics with 4th in Gent-Wevelgem,
and 8th Paris-Roubaix
You can follow the entire race live on Norwegian TV2 from 12.30 CET.

Ein „perfektes Team" für Klier
Mit einer hochmotivierten Mannschaft startet das T-Mobile
Team am Sonntag bei der 90. Flandern-Rundfahrt.
