PARIS-NICE 64th edition
Bobby Julich wins the  4.8 km Prologue to take the race lead in this grand tradition "Race for the Sun" Andrey Kashechkin, Bradley McGee 2nd and 3rd. Boonen, Contador, Sanchez in a dead heat for 4th at :03.

The opening of the race to the sun opened under typical cold cloudy weather this afternoon with some rain today. 168 riders took the start out of the chute for the 4.8km prologue. Jose Azevedo of Portugal was the first to set break  6 :20 which became the time to beat until Kazakh rider Andrey Kashechkin of Liberty Mutual clocked a fast 6 :08.56
Julich ousted Kashechkin taking an additional second off the clock at 47.1 kph  to take the stage and the yellow Jersey.

Tom Boonen World Champion put in a fast show today to finish three seconds behind Julich, a margin that the Belgian will certainly want to make up for in the next stage sprints. Boonen clocked the same time as fourth-placed Spaniard Alberto Contador (Libery Seguros) and Basque Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel)

France’s Sylvain Chavanel (Bouygues Telecom), a pre-race favorite, had to be content with a good but not stellar time of 6:29. CSC's David Zabriskie, winner of the Tour de France first time trial, was also below par on 6:20. Ukraine’s Yaroslav Popovych was equally far from his best with a modest 6:27. Monday’s first stage takes the bunch from Villemandeur to St Amand Montrond over 193 kms.

Bobby Julich  who stated earlier in the month at the CSC Solvang training camp that his Paris Nice would not be a target this year, said after his win, "It's a surprise win for me today because this was not a major goal for me coming here. Paris-Nice is above all a warm-up race for the rest of the season. But this morning in training I realised I had the legs to achieve something and I told myself I should seize the opportunity. I came to Paris-Nice as the title holder, with the number one on my back and I also wanted to honor the jersey, but once again, it was not a major goal. But it the circumstances make it possible, of course I'll be looking for a good result at the end of the week." continued....

”I simply had killer legs today. The route suited me perfectly and I really had the feeling that I was fast. It was a special feeling to start as the last one and be able to keep everyone behind me. It's always a great feeling to win and it's quite a good statistic to kick off my European season: one start – one win! I'm probably in better shape than I realized myself so now we'll have to see what the race brings. Quick Step isn't far behind with Boonen and they'll likely go for the jersey now, which is just fine by me. We'll take it one day at a time without wearing the team down completely. I don't think the race will be decided until the mountains in the Nice area and if my legs are as good as they were today anything is possible,” said a happy Bobby Julich after his victory.

”Bobby did a fantastic prologue. Technically he was in a class of his own. There's no doubt he's in excellent shape even though he hasn't peaked yet – which makes it all the more impressive. Of course we'll try and defend the jersey, but I think there will be other teams with similar interests. There are three fairly flat stages before the race moves uphill and here the other teams will have to get out there and attack us in order to be a threat. From that point of view we're in a dream position,” said Bjarne Riis following the prologue.
