Team Roster for Amgen Tour of California
Having concluded its training camp and notched its first race win of 2006, the
Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada Pro Cycling Team has named its eight-rider squad
for the Amgen Tour of California, starting this Sunday, February 19, in San
Francisco.
Representing the team in the eight-day, 600-mile race will be Mike Dietrich,
Martin Gilbert, Ben Jacques-Maynes, Pete Lopinto, Dominique Perras, David
Robinson, Jackson Stewart, and Scott Zwizanski.
Jonas Carney, who will make his debut as Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada’s
Racing Manager at the Amgen Tour of California following 15 years as a pro
cyclist, commented, “We have confidence in Ben and Dominique to perform as our
team leaders, and in all our other riders to represent us in the breakaways and
help Ben and Dom against a very competitive field.”
Jacques-Maynes, who will play the role of local favorite for the two stage
finishes in San Jose, added, “Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada is one of the
smaller teams in the race and we need to pick our battles, but Jonas has done a
great job of outlining the battles that we can win. If we perform to our
potential, this will be a great race for us.”
In addition to reconnoitering several stages and adjusting to new bikes and
equipment, Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada’s camp also included the team’s season
debut at two local events over the weekend – the Apple Pie Criterium in Santa
Rosa and the Cherry Pie Criterium in Napa.
In Saturday’s Apple Pie race, Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada’s Dan Schmatz
and Gilbert went 1-2 in a field sprint finish, beating out Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner),
among others. “It’s always good to win the first race out of the blocks,” said
Carney.
In Sunday’s Cherry Pie race -contested by a number of teams preparing for the
Amgen Tour of California -Gilbert again took second, this time to Health Net p.b.
Maxxis’ Karl Menzies.
“We brought our whole team to these races and we were able to control things
pretty well. We also won some pies, which is always nice,” said General Manager
Robin Zellner. “I’m happy with how our camp turned out and we’re ready to race.”
