Challenge Illers Balears: Trofeo Calviá Updated

Germany's David Kopp (Gerolsteiner), took line honors in Thursday's fifth and final stage of the Challenge Illes Balears, the "Trofeo Calviá", from Magaluf to Palmanova over 149.3 km, which ended in a sprint as a previous, and serious breakaway - that saw David Bernabeu's teammate Julian Sánchez Pimienta as virtual GC leader for much of the stage - was chased down just in the very last metres of the ride.

So that overall champion of the first Spanish road event in the current season was the aforementioned Spaniard David Bernabeu of Comunitat Valenciana, who chased down attacks from Illes Balears' Toni Colom and finished in the middle of the pack and retained his overall lead.

After plenty of discussing - most if not all of it concerning just one topic: the suspension awarded to Roberto Heras - came before the stage kickoff, a bunch of 364 legs (as in 182 riders) rolled out of the hamlet of Magaluf, under sunny Mediterannean skies and in a temperature of 14°C, a couple minutes afore midday. The journey, containing no less than five ascents, got off to a hectic start, with several breakaway attempts, all of which failed, coming since the early kilometres. Kaiku's Israel Núñez found the way to make the headlines today too, as he won the first Meta Volante at Es Capdellà (km. 8), straight ahead of José Rafael Martínez (Relax-GAM) and Grupo Nicolás Mateo's Victor Hernández.

It took nineteen kilometres for the first significant breakaway group to form, as the same number (19) of riders, rolled off the front of the bunch. Soon later Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) led the frontrunners to the top of the second category climb of Sa Gramola, with Ruben Oarbeascoa (Kaiku) and German Thomas Ziegler (T-Mobile Team) in the other top three spots, and blonde sensation Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas), Ziegler's teammate/compatriot Marcus Burghardt, and Illes Balears' very own Tino Zaballa following.

The nineteen boys increased their lead up to 02'25" on the way to the second difficulty on menu today, better known as Coll de Claret (Cat. 3), coming after 57 km. and bringing good news to Burghardt, first across the top in front of the "orange" (as in "Euskaltel-Euskadi's") pair of Iñaki Isasi and Markel Irizar, with the bunch trailing by 02'12". The Spanish-speaking contingent took revenge at the Deia Special Sprint, with Tino Zaballa, David Arroyo (both wearing the Illes Baleares jersey) and another Spaniard taking all the points at stake. The gap ballooned to 03'45" by the km. 75 check while, after two hours of riding and as the stage hit the halfway point, Mr. Antonio "Toni" Colom, currently sitting in third place overall, seven seconds down to leader Bernabeu, made a first move; needless to say, the 2004 race winner wasn't allowed to go.

But the man didn't give up his fighting attitude and - after Ziegler had taken the points at the previous KOM prime, Coll de Soller - he tried again on the slopes of the Cat. 2 Coll de Claret, about 43 km. from the finish. Bernabeu immediately countered, and the duo stayed clear of the rest of the bunch for a while. They were absorbed before they could make it to the top of the climb anyway. In the meantime, also because of such skirmishes, the advantage held by the breakaway group had gone down to 01'15". Then Catalan Alberto Losada (Kaiku) and Basque Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) attacked the leading bunch, and quickly gained up to 01'09" on them on the way to the Establiments Special Sprint (km.124/25k. to go: Losada was 1st, Isasi took 2nd), while their advantage over the main peloton also kept rising again.

On the next ascent - the last one both in the stage and race, the Cat. 3 Coll des Tords, Julián Sánchez Pimienta - fourth-placed overall at the start today, no more than 26" down to teammate Bernabeu - attacked, and so did Jorge Azanza of Kaiku. The two Spaniards joined their compatriots, and Losada even lost contact on the slopes of the final climb, just to regain the leading group on the downhill section afterwards. Their advantage over their closest chasers was a good 36 seconds, while the main field was trailing by some 01'30". And Bernabeu's squad couldn't even try and chase Sánchez Pimienta down ... because it was also Pimienta's own squad.

So that it was other teams, like Phonak and Gerolsteiner, who came to Bernabeu's rescue, as they moved to the front forcing the pace and chasing very, very hard as the finishing line was getting closer. As a consequence, all previous escapees were soon swallowed, and so was Losada, once more unable to follow his breakaway mates. Azanza, Isasi and Sánchez Pimienta were the last ones to give up the fight, but they had to surrender to the chasing group in the very last metres, so that the Valenciana guy saw his hopes for a stage and/or GC win vanish. And so that, after all skirmishes and moves, attacks and counter-attacks, this hard-fought stage delighted us with, it all came down to a sprint. And you can be sure neither Kopp nor Bernabeau would complain that much about it.
