Tour of Qatar - Stage 3

Stage 3

Who can beat Tom Boonen? The world champion made it four consecutive wins out of the four races he has started this year, thus preserving his unbeaten record. In the Khalifa Stadium, after the longest stage of this year’s Tour of Qatar, the prolific twenty-five year old beat Erik Zabel (Milram) and promising second-year pro Matti Breschel (see below) of Team CSC. It was another virtuoso performance from both Boonen and his Quick Step teammates, as Guido Trenti set the pace before peeling away to allow Boonen to win from the front. Stephen de Jongh was even permitted to take a day off from leadout duties, and he showed his own ability with a sixth place finish.

Early on, a break of nine riders had gone away, including riders such as Geert Omloop, Chris Horner, Lilian Jegou and Christian Knees. However, after reaching a lead of 8 minutes, the escapees were quickly pegged back as CSC and Quick Step kept the speed high in a peloton truncated by the tailwind and the resulting speed and splits. Late on, with 12km to the finish, Wiesenhof-AKUD neo-pro Tim Klinger made an audacious solo attempt for glory; he was only hauled back with four kilometres to go.

Professional cycling has not seen four consecutive race victories in years; for it to happen in the very first races of the season is unprecedented. Last year, Stephen Schumacher, snapped up by Gerolsteiner this winter, and Ivan Basso both won three stages in a row at the Rheinland Pfalz-Rundfahrt and Tour of Denmark.

A sympathetic thought must be spared for Erik Zabel, debuting in Qatar with the new Milram team, who has painfully achieved four consecutive podium positions as Boonen’s shadow. In recent years, it has seemed increasingly clear that Zabel, 36 in July, has lost some acceleration in the finishes: in the last two years, the veteran German has had thirty-nine second and third-place finishes in comparison to eight victories. Although his triumph at Paris-Tours reminded us that Zabel still has the speed, craft and killer instinct of old within him, another year of near-misses and few victories will not please his employers. At any rate, this could be the last year for one of professional cycling’s most faithful servant, a dedicated rider who races hard from February to October.

Wilfried Peeters (Quick Step directeur sportif)
"The team is showing day after day to be a winning group, compact around its captain. In Qatar the race conditions are different from those that we usually meet on the European roads, the strong wind is a constant factor that makes the race nervous and difficult to manage. In these days we have had numerous “echelons” that have forced the team to work hard, but we are happy for our results.”

Alain Gallopin (Team CSC directeur sportif)
“We had six riders in the lead group and again the team worked together really well. Matti was excellent in the finish and it's great to see him mixing in the company of the world's best sprinters. He's now leading the Best Young Rider's competition and also moved up a couple of places in the overall standings, so all in all it was a good day for us.”

Matti Breschel (third place)
”I felt really good today and it was brilliant to know, that I'm able to sit all the way up front in a sprint. Boonen is truly outstanding, but I almost passed Zabel and of course that does provide me with a certain amount of confidence,” said Matti Breschel, who is now fifth overall – 27 seconds after Boonen.
