Tour of Qatar - Stage 1

Stage 1

Following his victory in the Doha International GP, Tom Boonen wasted little time in making it two victories from two races. Though the weather was sunny, the 131.5km route from Khalifa Stadium to Al Khor Corniche was plagued by strong crosswinds. After thwarting some spirited early attacks from the young Kazakhs of Team Capec, Quick Step got into echelon formation and split the peloton to pieces.

Chocolade Jacques initially tried to peg back the forty-odd riders in the front split, but the gap froze at around 1’30”. Gradually, strong driving from Phonak and Quick Step, powerful squads which had four and five riders in the split, in front gradually broke the chasing spirit of the pack, while more riders were shed from the leading group due to punctures and the unforgiving pace. Meanwhile, blissfully for some no doubt, the wind changed direction to a tailwind for the last quarter of the stage.

By the end, only sixteen riders were in close quarters. Stephen de Jongh, poached from Rabobank as poisson pilote for the world champion, once again delivered Boonen into an ideal position and the Belgian star did the rest, outgunning Erik Zabel (Milram) and Robert Hunter (Phonak) in a copy of the Doha podium. Fabian Cancellara took a good fourth, while neo-pro Nick Ingels (Davitamon-Lotto) shone in seventh. Only eleven riders finished on the same time; the peloton finished over twelve minutes down.

Wilfried Peeters
“Again today, the wind was the decisive factor. The guys were good not to be surprised by the wind and in the finish, Tom was able to count on the support of five teammates. In the last kilometre, first Trenti, then Tosatto and De Jongh worked splendidly for Tom, who began his sprint 200m from the line.”

Tom Boonen
“Today the team made the difference. Now I have the leader’s jersey, but for the moment I don’t want to think about the general classification. The most important thing is to be in good condition and test out the capabilities of our “train” in the final sprint.”
