|BROCHARD INSTEAD OF SIMONI|
According to the Teletekst of Belgian's TV1 the Saeco team has been excluded from the Tour de France, starting July 6th in Luxemburg. The Société du Tour de France has revoked its wildcard last Friday.
The organisers decided this after Saeco's Gilberto Simoni has been suspended. The winner of last year's Grio d'Italia has been tested positif for cocaine usage.
The French Team Jean Delatour will take Saeco's place. Laurent Brochart, a former world champion, is part of that team.
Paolo Savoldelli - winner of the Giro 2002 - does not want to think about his chances in the Tour de France yet. "The tour is a very nervous race with long time trials. You really need to prepare for it. The double Giro-Tour is extremely difficult. You need to be ready for it mentally and I am not."
For the 29-year old this victory in a grand tour is the biggest triomph in his career and very much a surprise: "I came for a stage win, this goes beyond my wildest dreams!" As a pro, Savoldelli won 13 times. His best year had been 1999, where he won a stage in the Giro and finished second overall. This season, he hadn't won anything yet, but this victory makes up for it of course. He has raced for three Italian teams: Roslotto, Saeco and now Index-Alexia.
FASSA BORTOLO THREATENS TO QUITS CYCLING
Cycling sponsor Fassa Bortolo threatens to retreat from cycling. The Italians are having it very difficult after their team leader francesco Casagrande was excluded from the Giro after causing the crash of Garcia in an uphill sprint. "That's the second time that something like that happens to us in a year" Paolo Fassa states in name of the sponsor. "Last year, Wladimir Belli got thrown out of the Giro after punching a spectator. If this happens again, we will quit the sport of cycling."
