No detailed news is available so far, but according to multiple sources the infamous NAS, the anti-drug squads of Italy's "Carabinieri," are currently searching rider rooms in the hotels where the Giro protagonists are staying after the end of Wednesday's hilly stage (and on the eve of another gruelling, maybe decisive leg).
Seems that the teams targeted were essentially Panaria-Fiordo, Mercatone Uno, Mapei-Quick Step and Saeco-Longoni Sport, namely, the 4 squads already involved in doping scandals in the first part of the race, with riders testing postive or even arrested, as in the Panaria case, Mercatone's Sgambelluri positive for Nesp, and the famous Garzelli and Simoni affairs for Mapei and Saeco respectively. The Carabinieri reportedly seized Garzelli's medical record and relative files.
Mapei-Quick Step is also the team the current pink jersey, Australia's Cadel Evans, rides for.
Will these raids storm the Giro the way they did last year in San Remo? More details to come as soon as we get them!
