Stage 3: Rome Individual Time Trial, 18.6 miles/29.9 km

Floyd Landis (USA) of Phonak posted the winning time of 39.58.09 in Stage Three, the Individual Time Trial, in Rome and will start Stage 4 in the Dodge Race Leader jersey. Fellow Americans David Zabriskie of Team CSC and Chris Baldwin of Navigators Insurance finished second at 40.17.06 and third at 40.20.03 respectively. Seven Americans finished in the top 10 including Discovery Channel's Lance Armstrong at ninth.

Stage 3 of the 2005 Dodge Tour de Georgia began with late morning sprinkles that turned into early afternoon showers as cyclists raced across the country roads of Floyd County, along the Coosa River and up Mount Alto, known for its steep pitches and tricky descent, made more complicated by the slick, wet roads. While the rain didn't keep the fans away, it did played a role in today's Individual Time Trail, also called the race against the clock, as riders are less willing to take risks on slippery roads.

"My idea was to go see how well the first half went, and then if I had the possibility to win, take some risks in the downhill. But if I wasn't doing so well, I certainly would have not taken any risks," said Landis about his ride. The fans here have been very supportive. The fans here are good, as good as any in the world. You're proud to be an American when you're here on your own turf and all the fans are positive and behind the race. It's a real honor to be here."

In addition to the yellow jersey changing hands today, the GE Best Young Rider jersey went to Australian Trent Lowe of Jittery Joe's -Kalahari out of Athens, Ga. Andrea Tafi will remain in the Georgia Power King of the Mountains jersey and Greg Henderson of Health Net Maxxis will wear the Maxxis Sprint jersey as the race course heads in to the North Georgia Mountains.

On his plans to retain the GE Best Young Rider, Lowe said, "I want to chase (the jersey). It's not like I came in today expecting the jersey. It really is a novelty to it. It keeps fresh motivation to defend it."

Stage 4 begins in Dalton at 10 a.m. and takes the riders over four category climbs, Ft. Mountain, Woody Gap, Neel's Gap, and Wolfpen Gap. The 135 mile stage is the first of two grueling mountain stages In 2004, Jason McCartney, now riding for Discovery Channel, got away on a solo break for the stage win.

The Navigators Report

Chris Baldwin steps up to All-American podium

The 3rd stage of this year's Dodge Tour de Georgia has been touted as the start of the selection for the Overall Classification, and it appears that the predictions have been valid. The 30-Km (18-mi.) Individual Time Trial stage had the riders meandering along the Coosa River before climbing the steep Mt. Alto. The final 10-Kms drop the riders back down into the City of Rome and the large crowds of spectators. The at times technical course was made a little treacherous by intermittent rains that began shortly after the first riders hit the course, but the conditions seemed to effect all of the riders equally, negating any perceived advantages of earlier dry roads.

The Navigators Insurance squad began the day with several strong rides, as Jeff Louder posted the fastest time of the day, before having teammate David O'Loughlin take over the top spot. Navigators' current Australian National Time Trial Champion; Nathan O'Neill, also posted a fast time putting him 24-seconds behind the new best time of David Zabriskie (CSC), the current U.S. National Time Trial Champion. With 30 riders still out on the wet roads, the Navigators Insurance team has O'Neill and O'Loughlin on the podium with Zabriskie in the lead.

The fast times of several race favorites continue to come in, displacing many of the current leaders. A new time is posted that pushes O'Neill and O'Loughlin down a spot, but it's none other than Navigators' former U.S. National Time Trial Champion Chris Baldwin! Despite the rain, the crowds are huge as the final racers are also strong time trialists, including the popular Lance Armstrong. When the last of the riders finally crossed the line, it was Floyd Landis taking the top spot as Zabriskie dropped into 2nd, while Baldwin retained 3rd place. Navigators' Nathan O'Neill finished in 5th just behind Bobby Julich (CSC). An All-American podium was certainly a thrill for the City of Rome. The next 2 stages will test the climbing abilities of the riders as the race heads into the hills of northern Georgia.

Symmetrics Team Update

Mark Cunningham of Symmetrics reports:

Symmetrics has just finished up Stage 3 at the Dodge Tour de Georgia with the entire team intact and some great results considering we are competing against 8 of the top Pro Tour teams from Europe and the best teams in North America. The first few days were rolling with very difficult finishing circuits both technically and physically. Today’s time trial was hard, to say the least, with a long climb and treacherous descent. The rain soaked roads didn’t help the riders.

I had the pleasure of riding on the back of the media motorcycle to take some shots of the Canadian boys which you can see on our website. My cameras and I were equally as wet as the riders by the end of the day.

At the end of today our top two overall positions are 23rd (Eric Wohlberg) and 26th (Svein Tuft). Christian Meier is sitting 7th in the Best Young Rider category.

If you listen to Mojo Sports Radio in Vancouver, B.C., Kevin Cunningham (Westlam/Crown 44 sponsor) did a live chat with Arthur Griffiths (former Vancouver Canucks owner) on his sports talk show. Kevin is with the rest of us in Georgia so it was a great opportunity to spread the word about our team and sponsors while we participate in the largest stage race in North America.
