7th Giro della Provincia di Lucca (1.1): Updated

And who could put end to his winning streak? But Mario Cipollini of course! The Lion King was the winner of Monday's 7th edition of Giro della Provincia di Lucca, which recently got a new "status" as one-day race. Cipo opened his 2005 season account and got his first win for Liquigas-Bianchi on Italian soil, while Petacchi came in third only, as he was beaten also by the "next big thing" on the Italian - and perhaps not just Italian - sprinting scene, Panaria's rookie Paride Grillo, who scored another good result in his sensational early season campaign.

The race got off to a slow start, with the peloton covering 31.600 km only in the first hour. Despite of this, several breakaway attempts came, all of which were chased down, until Ukrainian neo-professional rider Andriy Grivko (Domina Vacanze) as well as Italy's Nicola Scattolin (Androni Giocattoli-3C Casalinghi) and more experienced Dane Lars Michaelsen (Team CSC) broke clear of the bunch after 64 km. Riders sped up the pace a bit, such that after two hours the average speed was 36 kph), but the trio built a maximum lead of 04'30" as they hit Altopascio for the first time. Then came 4 laps of a closing circuit of about 20 km., encompassing the Montecarlo climb. And the relative descent, which split the chasing field in two the first time it was tackled.

The peloton regrouped soon later though, and brought the gap down to 03'23" by the end of the first lap. The Italo-Danish-Ukrainian front group lost even more seconds to the chasers in the second lap (which was covered in a time of 31'45", while the first one was covered in 31'00"), so that, with 60k to go, they were leading the Fassa Bortolo-led (of course) bunch by 02'30" only.

While coming down Montecarlo for the second time, the bunch splintered again, but so did the leading trio, with Grivko gaining about 150m on his breakaway mates. The three got together again by km.124, but their lead never ceased dropping, and it was just a mere 01'34" with two laps remaining. Their attempt was over sooon later, with Michaelsen pulled back into the bunch with 40 km. to the line (he wasn't going to finish the race), and the Grivko-Scattolin pair four kilometres later. As a recent (unwritten) cycling law says, you can't escape the Fassa Bortolo chasing machine if Alessandro Petacchi is around competing.

Three riders had a go at breaking that law as the race hit the Montecarlo climb for the last time: as we said in our race preview (see link down in t he page), we expected Vincenzo Nibali to show off somehow today. And the young Sicilian didn't disappoint us: he attacked along with compatriots Elio Aggiano (back to his breaking away habits) and Danilo Di Luca. But even if Nibali is one of Petacchi's teammates, the trio wasn't allowed to go; As the race hit the small Tuscan hamlet of Montecarlo (sorry, no princes and no Formula One races here ...), Ivan Basso hit the tarmac, thankfully without major consequences, as the TdF 2004 podium finisher was immediately back in the saddle.

The descent split the bunch for the third time, with the first group containing both Cipo and Petacchi. Team LPR's Aggiano tried again with 7k to go. but his attempt had no better result than the previous one. So that it all couldn't help but coming down to another bunch sprint, though the outcome was a bit different this time, with Petacchi losing his first sprint since his season debut in the same region Tuscany one month and one day ago.

It was a comfortable win for Cipo, back to the races after being unfit for a couple weeks, such that he had to skip both Clásica de Almeria and Vuelta a Murcia "This victory is the result of the good, serene climate at Liquigas-Bianchi. They gave us the chance to ride under ideal conditions, without putting excessive pressure on us". Conditions which helped the team overcome some little misfortunes, like the flat Magnus Backstedt, the last man of the Liquigas "treno", had in the last kilometres: "so we opted for following the wheels of Petacchi's squad. My teammates drove me until the final km., then I just marked Alessandro. Velo and Petacchi exited the last turn, some 500m from the line, at the front of the peloton; but then I came out and launched the sprint early, anticipating Petacchi's move, and managed to hold onto a two-bike length lead over Petacchi". Cipollini won the first battle, but we are going to have several more clashes between the two top sprinters in the next days, both at Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo. Cipo is already much more focused on the Classica di Primavera than the forthcoming "Race of the Two Seas" (mrking the debut of the UCI Pro Tour on Italian soil) anyway, and confident that he can do well on the way to Via Roma: "(Milan-Sanremo) is my first real goal of the season, and if I should held on on the Poggio, I think I could play my part at the line".
