Criterium des Espoirs - Stage 2 & Final Results

Confusion must be all the rage in French cycling this month. After chaos marred the GP Ouverture La Marseillaise season opener on February 1st (report here), things were similarly chaotic in the third and final stage of the "Criterium des Espoirs" open event, running on Sunday afternoon in the south-western part of France.

The 71 km. ride, consisting of several laps around the Basque town of Saint Jean de Luz, was held in extremely adverse weather conditions, and with some riders in the front group mixing with lapped cyclists, things got completely out of control, so that drawing up a stage classification became mission impossible for the organizers. Who eventually made the decision to cancel the leg and consider the race standings after stage two as final GC of this 2.2-rated event.

To the delight of Jean Mespoulède, overall leader after Sunday morning’s 73-km. stage from St. Jean de Luz to the top of Col d’Ibardin (won by another young gun, Paul Brousse of the UC Châteauroux team, with Mespoulède taking the runner-up spot in front of better-known professional rider Christophe Rinero of RAGT Semences), and was (perhaps) unexpectedly declared winner of the race, with the same time as Rinero and stage two 4th place finisher Fabrice Jeandesboz.

The demanding stage up Col d’Ibardin, featuring the only mountain top finish of the event, saw the pros of RAGT Semences and AG2R Prévoyance, a bit disappointing in Saturday’s opener (see link at the bottom of the page), showing their superiority over most of their Under 23 and Elite 2 colleagues, as they got seven riders into the top 11 spots, as well as five athletes in the top 10 places overall, Spain’s Inigo Chaurreau and Mikel Astarloza included. But riders from the two professional teams missed both stage and overall victory, while the Club Cycliste Marmande 47 contender, also reigning champion of the Aquitaine region, could get another win under his belt, and opened his season account after he made the podium at Tour du Labourd this past Thursday. Saturday’s winner and first GC leader Mederic Clain took 13th in the stage and dropped to sixth overall, while Britain’s Andrew Jackson was the top English-speaking finisher as he ended up 16th on GC, about one and a half minutes down on Mespoulède.
