Phonak News - Juan Fernandez is New Sports Director

The new Phonak Cycling Team Manager, John Lelangue, today announced the Spaniard Juan Fernandez, 48, as Sports Director, with Frenchman Jacques Michaud and Swissman René Savary.

Fernandez, after a nice international cycling career, became a recognized Sports Director with the Clas Cajastur (1989-1994), Mapei (1995-1996), Festina (1999-2001) and Coast (2002) teams.

With this recruitment, John Lelangue has thus finalized his technical staff before taking charge of the team for the first training stage of the 2005 season, in Mallorca from 10th to 20th January.

Cycling World to Help Tsunami Efforts

The misery in southeast Asia has the cycling world going.

Saturday in Diksmuide, Belgium, there is going to be an attempt to collect as much money as possible on one day, for the regions which are overwhelmed by the tsunami. Karl Vannieuwkerke, sport journalist for the VRT, is one of the driving forces behind this initiative, which has the entire cooperation of the Davitamon-Lotto cycling team!

Cycling tourists and mountainbike lovers are welcome that day to cycle together with their cycling idols, and of course to bring money in! There is a pleasure ride (tourtocht) for the mountainbiker (42 km) and a road ride for the cyclist and/or cycling lover (56 km).

The teams Davitamon-Lotto, Quickstep-Innergetics, Mr Bookmaker, Chocolade Jacques-Vlaanderen, Bodysol-Win for Life-Jong Vlaanderen and Jartazi-Revor have already confirmed their presence.

Cycling fanatics get the chance to hit the road together with Peter Van Petegem, Nico Mattan, Serge Baguet, Johan Museeuw, Johan Vansummeren, Francesco Planckaert, Cedric Vasseur, Dave Bruylandts and many others.

Participation price is 10 €. This amount goes entirely to the action Tsunami 12-12.
Free start for the MTB begins at 8:30, and the road ride starts at 9 o'clock.
Starting in group with famous riders starts at 10 and 11 o'clock.

A call to everybody who loves cycling and cares for humans: come now - Saturday (January 8th) to Diksmuide!!!

Richard Virenque: a signed copy of Virenque's 7th spotted jersey!

Tour de France to Help Tsunami Appeal

French sports minister Jean-Francois Lamour has announced a three- to four year charity plan to help the victims of the tsunamis in Asia.

Several French sports organisations, including those representing basketball, cycling, football, handball, rugby union, tennis and volleyball, will raise funds for the operation. The plan will be organised with the help of the French Red Cross, Medecins sans frontieres, Sport sans frontieres and Coordination SUD, who will be in charge of the operations on the field.

"Our help must be at the level of the catastrophe that hit southern Asia," said Lamour at a press conference. "The emergency for those people is to survive at the moment but then there will be a time for rebuilding. "That is why we have chosen to set up a long-term plan."

The French football league and its president Frederic Thiriez have already announced they will donate one million euros (£700,000) while former France goalkeeper Bernard Lama has committed himself to organising a charity match involving the 1998 World Cup winning squad with all the money going to the victims.

French rugby federation boss Bernard Lapasset, as well as the Tour de France and Roland Garros organisers, have announced fund-raising operations.

T-Mobile Reports Sevilla Going Well

Oscar Sevilla is always on the go: "You are lucky that you caught me", says the baby-faced Spaniard, "I am just in from training." The new recruit to the magenta cause has been been flat-out in the last few weeks getting the training kilometres into his legs: "I have been pushing myself hard. Together with Francisco Lara we put in rides of up to 200 km per day. We both want to be in good shape when we travel to the team training camp on Mallorca on Saturday."

2005 will be his first year in magenta, but the Spanish climbing specialist was close to linking up with Telekom/T-Mobile Team a few years earlier. "Back in 2001, I tested the waters to see if it was possible to ride in a team together with Jan Ullrich", explains the diminutive Spaniard. But the time wasn't right, and his employers, Kelme, were unwilling to release him from his contract.

Unlike most of his new T-Mobile team mates, Sevilla and fellow Spaniard Lara don't have to travel very far for warm weather training at this time of the year. "Here in Spain, the temperatures drop in the evening time and the nights can be quite cold, you even get snow higher up on the Sierra Nevada, but by day, from around 10 AM, you can enjoy temperatures of between 12 and 20 degrees in the area around Granada. Perfect for training", reports Sevilla on the training conditions in southern Spain.

In reality, 'El Nino', who measures 1.75 metres in height and tips the scales at 62 kilos, moved to the area with the singular purpose of fine-tuning his climbing skills. "I want to support Jan Ullrich on the climbs, and help him to another Tour win", stresses Sevilla.

With the Tour in mind, the Spanish duo have trained diligently in the last few weeks. "We both want to feature in the Tour roster", says Sevilla. "But that is not the only reason why we have been training so hard. We are riding for the best team in the world now and we want to make sure that we slot in straight away." (GL)

Irish Eyes are Smiling

Navigators Insurance Cycling Team's new 2005 recruit, David O'Loughlin of Ireland, finished up his 2004-racing season with a victory in the An Ras Turcai, held in County Galloway, Ireland last week. The 150 participants cruised leisurely for the first 3 of 6 laps on the 10-kilometer circuit, before the racing began in earnest. With 1-lap remaining, David and Kurt Bogarts (Carrick Wheelers RC) left Mark Scanlon (ag2r-Prevoyance), the legendary Sean Kelly, and 146 others in arrears as the duo picked up the pace. At the line, O'Loughlin took the win in solo style with Bogarts in 2nd and P. Marrey (Western Lakes) taking the sprint for 3rd in front of Scanlon. David is the current Irish National Road Champion.

David, and the rest of his Navigators Insurance teammates are currently preparing for the UCI's first international event, the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, which begins in Australia on January 12th

Liberty Seguros Take Stock - 15 Wins in Their First Season

The Liberty Seguros website reports on their first season in the peloton:

“If we take notice of statistics, there’ve been two noteworthy men in 2004: Roberto Heras and Allan Davis. Between the two they’ve scooped 50% of the team’s victories. Mind you, it’s been thanks to the work of all the Liberty Seguros members which has managed to bring about this first brilliant season

November saw Liberty Seguros first birthday since its creation, however, the first anniversary of their first official race (Mallorca – February 2004) has yet to be celebrated, and the team can already boast a victory roll call of 15 triumphs: 12 stages and 3 triumphs in the final standings of different tours.

Nevertheless, we all have stamped on our memories the Vuelta Ciclista a España, Liberty Seguros first important tour and third for a radiant Roberto Heras, with stage victory included – the blue ribbon one that of Calar Alto. A Vuelta, which as Roberto himself recalled at the foot of the podium in Madrid: “it’s thanks to the work of the entire team. I’ve won the Vuelta thanks to them”. Thus, the rider from Béjar stands at the head of the Vuelta winner roll call together with Tony Rominger; not to mention reaching one of the year’s goals. The Tour didn’t turn out as planned and strength drained from a rider who one month earlier, and who right from the start of the season had considered the crucial test before the French tour, that of the Euskal Bizikleta, where he scooped the victory in the final standings of the GC.

However, Heras is not the rider with the most awards in the team. Allan Davis achieved 5 stage victories, revealing himself as the team’s undisputed sprinter; not to mention demonstrating his tremendous potential in massive arrivals and regularity at the tender age of 22. He’s finished among the top 10 of a stage on 31 occasions, whereby the number of triumphs could have been even greater. Furthermore, he was the first to set the ball rolling in the Liberty Seguros victory roll call in the 2004 season by winning the first stage in Mallorca. From there on until the penultimate race of the year, the Giro del Piamonte, which he also won; he added another victory in Mallorca just two days after the first, one stage in the Deutschland Tour of June; and in September he scooped the Tour de Pologne, where he also made off with the regularity and combined standings.

In addition to the gold of La Vuelta, Liberty Seguros tinged its jersey in a myriad of colours. A radiant Ángel Vicioso sheathed the Euskal Bizikleta blue, although in the end it was Heras who brought the victory home. Three second placings and two third placings, plus the victory of two stages in the Euskal; the first was also accompanied by the second and third placings of Roberto Heras and Koldo Gil respectively. And, on that very same day Davis won in Germany, making it Liberty Seguros most rewarding day. Stage two on the following day against the stopwatch, again escorted by Roberto Heras, dressed in green as the regularity leader. However, his winning streak was brought to a halt after a fall in the Tour de France, which prevented him from riding in the Vuelta Ciclista a España.

Koldo Gil didn’t win a stage, however, he sported the leader’s blue on the final podium of the Vuelta a Castilla y León, thereby becoming his confirmation in the professional field, where he’d never achieved a great victory. Luis León Sánchez sported the yellow jersey in Asturias after winning the first stage, two days after scooping the Alcobendas time trial at the tender age of 20. The burgundy of the best climber was sported by Javier Ramírez Abeja in the Setmana Catalana and Contador the red, for the same classification but in the Vuelta a Aragón. Without changing the jersey, but also on the podium were Carlos Barredo, the neo-professional who won on home ground in Gijón during the Vuelta a Asturias; and Marcos Serrano the rider from Pontevedra surprised everybody by winning the sprint in the Milán Torino, the most important victory of his career at 32.

A year replete with victories; whose success is based on team consolidation, and interconnection of all its components – and all this in just one season. The best example of this has been the granting of one of the 19 UCI Pro Tour licences – a new competition system which will start in the forthcoming year and where Liberty Seguros aims to be one of the major stars.

Golden Tour, Set over 12 Stages, Gets April Flagoff

The fourth oldest stage race in the world will run again in April, as ABS-CBN NEWS reports:

This summer heats up further with the staging of the 50th edition of the fabled Tour Pilipinas, with 80 riders vying for fame and fortune in the world’s fourth oldest multistage bicycle race. Revived in 2002 by Bert Lina through his logistics company Air21, the 2005 Tour is tentatively set from April 13 to 24. It is initially set over 12 stages, covering more than 2,000 km on Luzon island. The Philippine National Cycling Association, headed by former champion and Eagle of the Mountain Paquito Rivas, will again supervise the race, which ranks behind the Tour de France, the Vuelta España and the Giro de Italia as the oldest tour in the world.

The Manila to Vigan Race staged to celebrate the then-Tobacco Festival in 1955 kicked off what was to become the country’s No. 1 sports spectacle every summer, an event that has metamorphosed into a Filipino tradition. Lina is credited for the return of the Tour beginning in 2002, when he organized the four-day FedEx Express Tour of Calabarzon. That four-day race was a dry run for the Tour’s return—a 15-stage race in 2003 topped by Arnel Quirimit and an 18-stage 2004 edition ruled by Rhyan Tanguilig.

Tour organizer Lito Alvarez said at least 10 commercial teams will vie in the 2005 Tour, dubbed as the Golden Tour, although the number is expected to rise with several others expressing desire to join the event. The Tour has developed from the previous region-oriented competition to an inter-commercial format, very much the same as the concept adopted by the Union Cycliste Internationale as regards trade teams.

The 80 riders include seeded cyclists Enrique Domingo (2005 Sprint King) and Baler Ravina (2005 Rookie of the Year) and 78 others who emerged from a field of close to 300 in the two-day qualifying races staged last month in Cavite and Batangas. On the roster of expected coaches are former Tour champions Carlo Guieb, Renato Dolosa, Rolando Pagnanawon, Gerardo Igos and Romeo Bonzo. Guieb is one of only four who won back-to-back, while Dolosa, who is an assistant coach for the national developmental team under PhilCycling, won twice. Executive director Marito Mendoza said all 80 cyclists have shifted to high gear in their preparation for the Tour, which the national team will use as part of its training for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in November.

Almost all of those in the national pool have qualified for the Tour, including Vietnam Sea Games mountain bike gold medalist Eusebio Quiñones and bronze medalist Frederick Feliciano and road silver medal winner Warren Davadilla. Also on the roster are ageless veteran Bernardo Llentada, a former champion, and Tarlac pride Loreto Mandi.

Subway Cycling Team

McKenzie Bridge, Oregon, USA  – The Subway team returns this year as a US Continental Team with a mix of young talent and veteran racers. The team will kick off its season with a camp in Merced, California, February 25 - March 7, which will be open to additional guests from March 1-7. The camp will also overlap the first NRC race of the year McLane Pacific, which will serve as the team’s first official race outing.

Although managed by Express Racing and associated with the Express Racing Club, the team will shorten its moniker to Subway from last year’s Subway-Express. Team Subway will again be aboard Fuji bicycles, riding the same new carbon framesets as Judith Arndt did in her 2004 World Championship ride. New for Subway this year is a women’s team, taking the total team numbers to 12 men and eight women.

Seven riders will return from 2004 to the men’s team, with the five new additions all under age 26. With only three riders over age 30, Subway will function as a development team, focusing on UCI races and top National Racing Calendar races in the U.S. “I’m looking forward to taking this group of riders to the biggest races in the US and teaching these guys to race and present themselves as pros,” said returning Manager/Director René Wenzel. “We have some great young talent and some older guys who are really committed to the team. I think we’ll surprise a lot of people this year.”

Returning to the Subway team is veteran Cameron Hughes of Scotts Head, Australia, on the second year of his comeback with top 25 finishes at the 2004 Cascade Classic and San Francisco Grand Prix. Also returning is 2001 Elite US Champion Remi McManus of Boise, ID. David Richter of Seattle, WA returns as one of the teams sprinters, building on his time trial win at the Bermuda Grand Prix. As the team’s virtual “Jared”, youngster Omer Kem of Salem, OR returns slimmed down from 162 to 145 pounds for 2005, making the 2003 Oregon Pro Mountain Bike Series Champion a threat in the hills. New to the team is road convert Ryan McKenzie, a seven-time Canadian National Champion on the track from Calgary, Alberta. The team also ads Joshua Carter of Fairview Heights, IL, winner of the sprint jersey at the 2004 Tour of Ohio and Illinois State Road Race and Criterium Champion.

Rounding out the team are returning members Nathaniel Cornelius (sprinter, Lexington, KY), Todd Cornelius (all-arounder, Indianapolis, IN), and Robbie Yost (Murfreesboro, TN), and new members Peter Femal (all-arounder, Appleton, WI), Kevin Vanes (all-arounder, Indianapolis, IN), and Scott Walters (all-arounder, Oak Brook, IL).

On the women’s side, the team is packed with strong riders from the Northwest and Rocky Mountain states. Winner of the 2004 Tour of Somerville and American Criterium Series Champion Melissa Sanborn of McKenzie Bridge, Oregon comes on board as the team’s top sprinter. Bringing climbing prowess to the team is Suz Weldon of Briar, Washington, winner of the state’s Best All-round Rider competition in both 2003 and 2004 and the owner of five new course records in Northwest time trials and hill climbs in 2004. Also joining are 2004 Masters 30-35 Time Trial Champion Sima Trapp of Boise, Idaho and three-time Division II National Collegiate Champion Nichole Wangsgard of Longmont, Colorado. Bringing a mix of time trialing and climbing strength are members Liza Rachetto (Boise, Idaho), Emily Westbrook (Seattle, Washington), and Crystal Yap (Logan, Utah).

Like the men, the women’s team will also go after a strong NRC showing. “Our women’s team has a particularly good mix of sprinting, time trialing and climbing talent. With strong direction, we expect this team to win a lot of races,” said Wenzel. That direction will come from Wenzel himself, along with assistant directors Erin Hartwell (two-time Olympic medalist) and former racer Kendra Wenzel (team Saeco-Timex).

Also strengthening Express Racing and the Subway team in 2005 and beyond is the addition of new partner and business manager Daniel Byrne of Seattle, Washington. A cycling enthusiast since 1984, Byrne is the founder and owner of Byrne Specialty Gases, bringing a strong business background to Express Racing. Combined with Wenzel's experience in pro cycling management, the two partners are approaching the development and promotion of cycling with a fresh look.

The Subway team will convene February 25th for its spring training camp in Merced, California. This camp is open for additional guests to ride, learn and race along with the team. For more information on the camp and the team, go to www.expressracing.net or call Express Racing at 541-822-9845.
