18th Tour du Faso - Stages Six through Eight

Stage 6: Boromo - Koudougou, 115 km

Abdoul Sawadogo and his team had their work cut out for them on Monday's "Red Clay Stage" - to maintain his yellow jersey. This stage traversed some of the same road as on Stage 2, and the road condition being unsafe, the stage was cut short. The riders signed in at Boromo, then climbed aboard their buses to reach the actual start. Added to this, the final 25 kilometers into Koudougou were red dirt track and not road.

The Burkina government had attempted repairs to the bypassed portion of the course over the past months, and even had water trucks to keep the dust down, but the efforts were not enough to allow the portion to be included. Race director Laurent Bezault (who raced on Toshiba) and the very famous Jean Stablinski, DS of the French Hainaut team, were asked to compare the stretch to Paris-Roubaix - Bezault said it was less difficult, but that it was a cart track that was also used by autos, contributing to its poor condition. Stabilinski agreed.

After the revised start, Gunter Cuylits and Olivier Keita of Senegal broke away after about ten kilometers of racing, with a gap that would go up and down from between half a minute and a minute for the next 50 kilometers. Thus the stage continued until the pack was all together just at the beginning of the dirt portion of the course, at the 25 km to go point. Now came the time of the opportunists. Karel Pattyn attacked and continued to gain time, until at 8km to go, he had a lead of 1'25". But his solo win was not to be - he punctured. Though he regained the peloton, Abdoulaye Thiam (Sen) and Joris Van Mechelen (Belgium) rolled the dice next, with Van Mechelen taking the advantage over Thiam. Puncture! At one km to go! But Van Mechelen keeps going, holding onto two tiny seconds to cross the line ahead of Dennis Flahaut and yellow jersey Sawadogo. Karrel Pattyn, certainly a key animator in this year's edition and yellow jersey on Stage 4, punctured four times in the final five kilometers and was a very unhappy man when he finally crossed the line in 15th.

The day's winner Van Mechelen compared this dirt portion of the stage to Belgian pave, which he rides at home: "On cobbles there is always a way to ride along on sides [of the road] and to avoid the difficult places. Here there is sand and everywhere are stones. I died, but I'm happy."

The clay coated riders were glad that this, their last stage before the rest day, was over. Le Tour described this stage as "red jersey for everyone" due to the red dust all the riders wore to the finish.

"Three jersey" Sawadogo would go into the rest day in the leader's jersey (with a comfortable 1 minute 20 seconds ahead of second placed Thierry), the blue Best African jersey and the UEMOA West African Alliance jersey. David Thierry would rest in the green points jersey, Gunther Cuylits wore pink and Malick Thiam would wear white for best young rider.

Stage 7: Ouagadougou - Yako, 100,5 km

After a rest day on Tuesday, the Tour du Faso resumed on Wednesday, 3 November. Three dozen riders formed a leading group after 15 kilometers of racing, with the lead group getting a gap of 1:35 by the 33 kilometer mark. As is characteristic in this African contest, it was again a Belgian who further animated the race: intermediate sprint leader Gunter Cuylits attacked from the lead group and was followed by Burkinabè Saïdou Rouamba.

Following them, two more riders attack: Marcio Mucanza (Angola team captain) and Mahamadi Sawadogo. Mahamadi wants the intermediate sprint in his hometown of Boussé but it is Cuylits who takes all three intermediate sprints of the day. Then two more try their luck - Philippe Chevalier and Michel Lelièvre. The leading group becomes six, but they are caught just as they enter Yako. At ten kilometers to go, it is the Angolan Mucanza and Rouamba battling it out to the line - Mucanza takes line honors while Rouamba takes 27 points in the green jersey competition, putting him only four points down on Green Jersey leader Denis Flahaut.

Sawadogo's race lead does not change, and he remains in a total of three jerseys. It is beginning to look as though the most fervently wished race outcome for this edition may come true - a Burkinabè in yellow at race end...

Stage 8: Yako - Ouahigouya, 74 km

With a designed short stage on Thursday (as opposed to shortened stages due to unfavorable road conditions), today the Burkina teams made sure that it was gruppo compatto all the way north from Yako to Ouhigouya, the northernmost point of this race. But it was not for lack of efforts - Senegalese team leader Olivier Keita attacked early on with a group of seven others, but Keita punctured and the break was short-lived. Once repaired, Keita tried his luck again at the 27 km mark, but the Burkinabès would have none of it, controlling the race to the inevitable sprint finish.

Under the Flamme Rouge, it is Kris Heremans and Fabrice Debrabant who take off, setting up their sprinters: Heremens belongs to the Vasco-Avia-Modemakers team of Cuylits, Pattyn and Van Mechelen, while Debrabant was hoping to lead out his teammate Flahaut of the Porte Du Hainaut team from France.

Indeed it is Flahaut who flies over the line ahead of Jorry Walgien (Hol) and Saïdou Rouamba (Bur), taking his second stage win.

Le Tour's feature article of the day focuses on "correur ancien" Jean Stabilinski, in Burkina Faso as DS of today's winning Hainaut team, and his reminisces of the finishing city Ouahigouya, the last place his friend Fausto Coppi raced (the Criterium of Ouagadougou in 1959). The 72 year old ex-pro said, "I toured the world several times, I even racing in India. But I never went to Africa. What also pleases me, it is that kids that I'm taking [the Hainaut team] are going to race in conditions that speak to me. For example, this is a race that I like, like the old days."
