Not many details about Simoni's have been made known so far, but according to Italian sources, the next victim (protagonist) of the doping scandal is no less than Gilberto Simoni.
Indeed, both Gazzetta dello Sport and Italian tv Teletext report that the Saeco rider, winner of last year's Giro, and main favorite of current edition along with Francesco Casagrande, has given non-negative to COCAINE (!!!!) at tests carried out by the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) on April 24, on the eve of Giro del Trentino. Some 15 riders (including Garzelli and Sgambelluri) underwent anti-doping tests that day.
Simoni denied he ever used any cocaine, and said that in the morning of the Wednesday we are talking about (the test was carried out at 11 PM in hotels were the 15 riders were staying) he went to the dentist, and maybe am anaesthetic used by the doctor could have contained Cocaine. He has not yet given the dentist's name anyway.
Should counter-analysis confirm the first results, Simoni could face a disqualification. Saeco-Longoni Sport just gave a press conference at 11AM Italian time. We are waiting for more details and interviews to come. In any case, the test is dating back to one month ago, and has the man has never given positive in this Tour of Italy (so far at least), that COULD leave the door open for his staying in the race ... Maybe.
Just let's wait and see whether Simoni is going to follow Garzelli's steps.
As for the Mapei rider, excluded from the Tour of Italy yesterday evening, he talked of his current state of mind in an interview given to RAI'S Alessandra de Stefano. Garzelli once again said his conscience his clear "I am serene and have nothing to reproach myself with, I'm an honest man, and know that IF (but he said IF, not WHEN) back to cycling, I'll be stronger than before". (See link below for a SPECIAL REPORT on the Stefano Garzelli case).
