4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta. Virtual Teams: GC after Stage 18

Thrsday's was one of the traditional "transition" stage, with so-called "lesser riders" and/or those far from the top of the overall going on the attack to get some glory, and the big guns of the bunch saving their legs for the final battles of the weekend. under such conditions, it's no sirprise that the stage impact on the Fantasy Vuelta overall was remarkably low. All top 5 contenders held onto their respective positions, and only the gaps among them chagned, but slightly.

Thanks to a handful of points from Liberty Seguros and Mancebo, which Andreas Lindh couldn't earn, virtual jersey oro Georg Reidarsen increased his advantage over his Swedish rival to nine poInts (it was just one at the end of the previous leg, when "Team Ture" moved to the top spot). Casting a glance at the respective riders and trade teams, one would say the the gap would widen in the forthcoming stages, but Reidarsen's lead is currently too small for anyone to see him as certain winner of the game.

Both Nordic players are likely to end up in the top three places overall, at the monet completed by Marcelino Abantao. With Heras and Cárdenas not failing to give him their precious points, "queda vuelta" put more points into both Philipp Paier, as his advantage over Heras-less Don Pippo went from 29 to 32. While closing down the gap to Abantao is getting more difficult, unless Valverde and Mancebo, currenty losing to Heras, bounce back in the two-three final days, the Austrian should also watch out for Cyrille Pluijmen, who can count on daily contributions from Zabel, Heras and the Liberty Seguros trade team. Cárdenas' showdown in the previous stage kept the Dutch contender from moving up into fourth, but "No Dope" is on his Philipp's heels as he brought the gap down to four points on only. Just another all-out battle from this sensational Vuelta is delivering us ...

More than the Fantasy stage scores, it was the "Tyker Hamilton sanctions" that shook the game on Thursday. As we repeatedly wrote, rules are clear: any rider testing positive during the race are stripped of their points. And in the Tour of Spain case both Hamilton's A & B samples gave positive, such that, like in the similar cases of Simoni and Garzelli (Fantasy Giro 2002) the points previously earned by the rider -and the virtual teams with him alike- were subtracted to their scores. As the points were just 32 (and were gained in the Factoría Ford ITT as the American claimed the stage and secured third place on the GC), and very few top contenders had picked him, the impact of the whole thing was quite limited. At the top of ranking at least,

The most noteworthy result was that the only top 30 player with Tyler, former GC leader Tim D. Hammer (five-point getter also in stage 18), moved down three places into ninth a little earlier than expected. And Denmark's Anders Pedersen moved to sixth one day or two in advance (csc-espana remains a strong top 5 contender, but much will depend on the next results of Valverde and Mancebo). And 29-stage point getter John Roguski (same score and scorers as Cyrille Pluijmen) became America's top overall contender one day or two in advance too. The man gained two places and moved ahead of Melissa Budd, who maintained hers and completed an unusually "multiethnic" top 8, with participants from eight different countries.

The battle for the remaining top 10 spot continues, with Bill Strachan as winner of the day. Valverde and his trade team (which is also Pascual Rodríguez's) and Erik Zabel earned him 27 points, and helped him move ahead of Jim Klepper, who paid for the lack of Zabel and dropped out of the top 10, and Todd Elenz (11 stage points and down to 14th place). The gaps among them all are quite small anyway. Although not as small as the four-point gap (to Frances Hurley) Spain's Vicente Pérez closed down Thursday: the combination of Valverde and Kelme did a better job than Roberto Heras, such that due to the "earlier team poster" rule "Club Ciclista Usabiaga" is currently sitting one place ahead of "Hurricane Frances". But the American has all of her chances to made it into the final top 10 intact.

Both John D. Renz and the former top member of the Danish Armada in this game (Mads Paulsen) moved up one place. Both with an equal stage score (13), courtesy of the same two riders (Zabel and Valverde). Aritz Azkune did the same, but that couldn't prevent Holland's Willem Punt, certainly one of the biggest winners of the day (his stage score was 22, courtesy of the "green boys" his virtual team is named after), to get into the top 20 spots and even move ahead of him.

After being one the Fantasy Vuelta main characters throughout the first two weeks, Belgium's Mark Vandenbergh is losing position after position, and is about to drop out of the top twenty overall. His chief rival for most of the game, Danny Pate. already did, and kindly delivered 20th place to Cheryl Coughlin, who's on the "moving up" side of the matter. Less than a week ago "Verdant Valverde" wasn't in the top 80 spots either, and now the American can boast a top 20 place. But with riders like the same Kelme leader, Zabel, Cárdenas and Nozal, even more good news are likely to come for her.

All riders above but Nozal are part of the line-up of Martin Connor too. "St Domingo" hit the stage top ten, and came close to enter the top 20 overall (didn't succeed only because of those tie-breaking rules ..). Connor is also winning the battle over the status of top British contender, with Mark David Chapman, three places and eleven points back of him, as chief rival.

Stage winner Phil Trostel gained no less than thirty places, and sure the bonus points he was awarded weren't stranger to that. He's only 15 points away fron hitting to the top 20 now. Richard Purkiss' gains equalled Trostel's, but weren't enough fot the Brit to enter the Top 100. The other main protagonist of Thursdy's stage, Colombian Mario Ballesteros came close to get into the top 40 spots.

As we anticipated in the stage 17 report, the "Tyler Hamilton" affair had quite an impact at the back of the pack. Thirty-two points less in the overall scores of Bridge Hunter, Craig Robertson and Andy McDobbin meant that, even without gaining a mere stage point (not that any of his three rivals did) Chris Gunnigham moved up two places, and had to give the red lantern back to Mr. Hunter. If the Canadian's goal at this point of the game is winning the last place prize, we can definitely say that luck is not on Gunnigham's side. But the battle is far from over: we gotta wait and see which other surprises the four closing stages of a Vuelta full of surprising things may still have in store.
