4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta. Virtual Teams: GC after Stage 17

Georg Reidarsen has taken the lead! Despite failing to hit the stage top 5 for the first time in six days, a stage score of 60 was enough for the Norwegian player to capture the "virtual gold jersey" he's likely to maintain until the end of the game. But despite Team Ture's sensational streak of top results, his move to top spot was not easy. Andreas Lindh always offered stiff resistance, and despite surrendering the lead the Swede is just one point down on his fellow Scandinavian, after all. It's true that the gap is likely to increase in the coming days, but the battle is far from over; the "Labbås" team, in the top 3 spots for the overwhelming majority of the game, and NEVER outside the top 5 so far (Lindh's worst overall placing was 5th, in stage 8 and 9), might still have one thing or two to say.

The battle for the gold (jersey) could have other protagonists too anyway. Three in particular: Marcelino Abantao, Philipp Paier and Cyrille Pluijmen. After Wednesday's triumph, first bonus points included, (curiously Wednesday saw players from the same three countries -Norway, Sweden and the Philippines- take the top 3 spots in both the stage and overall standings). Abantao also secured a place in top three overall. To close down the 66-points gap to Reidarsen is a very hard task, to say the least, but if Cárdenas should put in another similar performance, why not thinking big?

Although besides launching the final attack on the Scandinavian duo at the top, the Filipino should also watch out for the two European teams right behind him on GC: "Fassa Pippolo" and "No Chain". In the Stage 17 report we already mentioned Don Pippo's Wednesday result. And now we gotta add that, thanks to his stage score, the Austrian moved up two places into fourth. Philipp is the top player with Valverde as "A" rider, and has got Mancebo too, so he'll be rooting hard for the young Spaniard and the Illes Balears team leader in their battle(s) against Roberto Heras and Santi Pérez. And will be hoping in another showdown by Colombia's Cárdenas. Erik Zabel should grant him the "fish jersey" points instead.

The fifth main GC threat is Cyrille Pluijmen, the Dutch contender who didn't gain any positions (neither loss any) Wednesday, but still is within striking distance of "Fassa Pippolo". Pluijmen's top riders are Heras and Zabel (something common to most GC contenders), but "No Chain" has also guys like Luis Pérez or Leonardo Piepoli, who can pull some good results out of hat at (close to) any moment, the four remaining stages included.

No more Americans are in the GC top 5 after Tim D. Hammer slipped three places to sixth. His "Hammers"had a great first part of the game, with one stage win and a few days in the lead, but with just Zabel as regular point-provider in more recent stages, they couldn't hold off the oncoming trio of Abantao, Paier and Pluijmen. Hammer might move further down on GC as the decision concerning Tyler Hamilton's 32 points is finally made before the next stage. And also (notably) because some other strong virtual teams. with riders earning plenty of points in recent stages, are coming.

Players like Anders Pedersen. The Dane further cut the gap to Hammer, but didn't have a good stage. His score was just 25, and the man saw Abantao move ahead of him, and the gap to both Paier and Pluijmen go up. He didn't drop any place (also due to poor stage result of Melissa Budd, who dramatically dropped to eighth, and is likely to drop out of the top 10 in the next stages) and some good performances by Valverde and Mancebo, (not an impossible thing at all) might be of help: but his gap to Reidarsen is too big (142 points), and in such conditions all "csc-espana" can aim for is a top 3 spot.

Jim Klepper (10 stage points) and Todd Elenz (11) moved down one place each, thus yielding spot #9 to another U.S. player, John Roguski, who barely made it into Wednesday's top 30, but whose score (45, courtesy of the not uncommon combination of Heras, Zabel and Liberty Seguros), earned him a place in the top 10 overall. And could legitimately aim for the status of top American finisher in the game, although he'd better watch out for the two aforementioned rivals, but especially the likes of Bill Strachan (that would nullify his 10-point gap to Roguski in case Kelme and Valverde strikes back) and Frances Hurley. The Fantasy Tour Red Lantern made impressive gains over the last days, also thanks to Iñaki Isasi, achieved spot number 13, and is now aiming for a top 10 finish in this game. It won't be easy, but she has always SuperRoberto and Santi Pérez's Phonak team.

Vicente Pèrez held onto is 14th position, while Mark Vandenbergh's squad followed in the footsteps of many other sprinter-packed teams currently earning points just from Zabel, and dropped to 15th. A real protagonist of the Vuelta's first weeks, Vdb is now likely to slip outside the top 20 overall. Like Dave Arnold already did, and Danny Pate soon will. John Renz and Mads Paulsen lost a few positions Wednesday, while with Félix Cárdenas (and Valverde) in his squad Leonard Trolio couldn't help but moving back into the top 20. And last but not least, we gotta praise Aritz Azkune: we haven't mentioned him that much so far, but regardeless of this the Basque silently made his way into spot #19. He has gained more than 20 positions over the last 3-4 stages (eight on Wednesday's leg only), and with the likes of Cárdenas, Valverde and Zabel as top riders, he might well eyeing a top 10 finish come Sunday.

Bringing Tyler Hamilton's score back to zero after his Vuelta positive test would have quite a low impact on the top places. But the effects might be highr at the bottom of the ranking. First of all as Bridge Hunter's score would be 32 points lower, and the American would regain the Red Lantern, but also Craig Robertson would move behind Chris Gunnigham. And Andy McDobbin would come back as lanterne rouge prize contender, although after Juliá's 30 points on Tuesday the Brit made a further addition to his score (Cárdenas trade team Cafés Baque is the one to blame), that made even more difficult for him to achieve the goal he set at the start of this Fantasy Vuelta.
