4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta. Virtual Teams: GC after Stage 15

Let the battle begin! After climbing the stage podium thrice, and getting one more top 5 finish, all of the above in the last four days, Georg Reidarsen stormed into second overall, and did throw down the gauntlet: the Norse and Sweden's Andreas Lindh will be the protagonists of an all-Scandinavian (and quite unusual for our Fantasy Games) "clash of giants" that is likely to decide the final outcome of the Vuelta Fantástica 2004.

We just mentioned Tume Ture's recent exploits, and with riders like Mancebo, Heras and Zabel, plus Liberty Seguros, more should come in the final week of the race. But he'll probably need all of his big guns (Paco Mancebo in particular) to keep doing well until the vary last stage if he wants to win, as even if Reidarsen has taken close to 150 points out of his eastern neighbour over the last four stages, Lindh can still count on a 74-point lead. And a strong team, containing also some of Reidearsn's top riders, like Heras and Zabel. Will "Labbås", 29th place finisher with a more than respectable score of 29, hold onto his lead, or will his chief rival complete his spectacular climbing and take the overall title? The road will tell.

Tim D. Hammer got just his five "usual" stage points, scored by Erik Zabel, and moved down one place into third. Hammer's Hammer is one of the teams that, according to the Fantasy Vuelta rules, could be stripped of the 32 points Tyler Hamilton delivered to all those who picked him, when the Bostonian took the Vuelta's first ITT. But even with those points as part of his GC score the American is very likely to drop out of the top three overall in the very next stages anyway. Hammer has done well throughout the first two weeks of racing, has been in the top places since early in the game, but many of the riders making the headlines -and the points- in the Vuelta's second half are not in his line-up.

The biggest threat to Hammer doesn't come from Melissa Budd anyway, as the Aussie is in a similar situation. Ater being a protagonist (with three stage wins and a rcord number of bonus points earned) for the whole first half of the game, she gained very few points in recent hilly stages, also because many of the sprinters her team was packed with have already dropped out of the race. Former GC leader "Mel's Boys" is now off the top 3 spots, and it will be hard for the Australian move bak into the top three again.

The same thing can be said of other players whose names we got accustomed to, from Mark Vandenbergh to Danny Pate and Dave Arnold. Their sprinter-packed teams are no longer getting the previous super-scores (they all got just five points each in stage 15), and are moving down on the GC. "VdB" dropped to ninth, while both "Team Fantasy Presented By The Pate" and Arnold's "muddle headed ones", still firmly in the lead in the Points classification, got out of the top 10 overall.

It's time for newcomers to make the headlines now. Newcomers like the aforementioned Reidarsen, or Austria's Philipp Paier: Valverde, Mancebo, Zabel and David Blanco are a formidable quartet that earned him a top 10 spot in the stage standing, and took "Fassa Pippolo" all the way into the top 5 overall. He's more than 100 points down on GC, but remains the main suspect to provide an alternative to the Lindh-Reidarsen duel.

Zabel, Heras and Mancebo are the top scorers of another strong team too: Anders Pedersen's "csc españa". Similarly to "Fassa Pippolo", Denmark's top virtual team gained two positions after the Sierra Nevada ITT, making its way into spot number six. Pedersen might be another top 3 contender. And so might be Mars Abantao; after dropping to 10th Saturday, "queda-vuelta" was back making some gains, and moved up three places into seven, with all of his (38) stage points coming from Roberto Heras. He's far more likely to win the KOM classification rather than the overall, but if Heras should win the GC battle over Valverde, then he could legitimately aim for one of the top 3 place prizes.

The multinational top ten, with participants from nine different countries (another pleasant surprise of this Fantasy Vuelta) is completed by Cyrille Pluijmen and John D.Renz. Holland's "player of the moment" had an impressive streak of good results in recent days, and finally made it into the top 10. Cyrille's "unchained" team was ninth in the stage classification, and went from 13th to 8th in the overall standings. The American continued his moving inside and out the top 10 spots; Valverde and Zabel took his team into 10th place. It won't be easy for Renz to finish in the top 10, but "The flat tires" is hanging tough.

Places from 11 to 20 are currently like "transition" ones, featuring players who come from the top 10, and are perhaps moving further down in the next stages, after being protagonists for most of the game's first two weeks, as well as contenders -like Andrea Grandi and John Roguski- able to gain a few positions in the last stages, and maybe on their way to the same top ten. Peter Hurley and Carl Horton got out of the top 20, although Peter could be soon replaced by Frances Hurley: "Hurricane Frances" is already two points clear of "Mountain Sharks", and with a virtual team leader such as Roberto Heras, it would be no surprise to see it storm the top 20 quite soon. Back in July Frances was the Fantasy Tour de France eventual red lantern, but her team's performances are a whole different thing now; what a difference two months make!

Speaking of farorillos rojos, it looks like Andy McDobbin finally regained "his" last place. That was arguably the biggest effect of Vinokourov's first 13 points, as the Kazakh was Chris Gunningham's "A" rider, and the Canadian, whose cumulative score from stages 2 to 14 was just 5 (f-i-v-e), gained 13 points in one stage, taking his tally to 79, and moving in front of "Lanterne Rougians", although by the slimmest of margins. Another good news for Andy is that Bridge Hunter tallied 4 stage points (blame them on David Blanco!) and increased his gap to nine points.

Pérez and Vinokourov delivered some points to Emily Davies and Jim Flaherty respectively, making it harder for them to capture the last place prize, while Australian Craig Robertson was a non-scorer in the stage, and has become a very serious lanterne rouge contender. Especially in case all virtual teams featuring Hamilton, Little Spanish Flea Circus included, are stripped of the American's 32 points. But also Hunter and the same McDobbin has the Phonak (former??) rider; Hamilton's positive tests would hardly have a big impact in the top places, but may have a huge one at the bottom of the pack. Or maybe not. One more time the road (and the Fantasy Vuelta rules) will tell.
