4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta. Virtual Teams: GC after Stage 14

Big changes are likely to take place soon in most of the Fantasy Vuelta's overall standings. And actually some already did. But the top three virtual teams remain the same (at the moment). Sweden's Andreas Lindh, 32-point scorer on Saturday (Heras 27, Zabel 5) easily held onto the "virtual gold jersey", and increased his lead over Tim D. Hammer to 43 points, Despite gaining just five points, all of which from the T-Mobile appointed sprinter, Hammer's Hammers maintained their overall position. And so did Melissa Budd, whose stage score (7, with Petacchi's two points added to Zabel's score) was so low she couldn't move up to the runner-up spot. but good enough to save her third place. Actually Melissa even kept all of her advantage on fourth-placed Mark Vandenbergh, as like it happened more than once in the past, both players got the same daily score.

But the big news of the day definitely was the arrival into "top 10 land" of three players who may have a lot to say in the final part of this game. And represent the biggest challenge to Andreas Lindh's leadership. It's true that the Swede has a huge advantage over all of them, but he should beware of them anyway. And especially of Georg Reidarsen, who needed no more than three stages to move 85 places, going from 90th to 5th.

Since his "A" rider Roberto Heras took over the race leadership at Calar Alto, the Norse almost doubled his GC score, going from 288 to 538 points, 40 of which are bonus points, as "Team Ture" hit a stage top 3 twice in three days, the first time as winner, the second as runner-up. Numbers that, especially if combined to a look at his line-up, containing Heras and Zabel, but also Mancebo and the Liberty Seguros team, may help us realize why we should consider the man a real GC threat, and a very likely top 3 finisher on GC at least, although it won't be easy for him to close down his current gap to Lindh (103 points).

Philipp Paier's gains over the last three stages were less spectacular, as the Austrian was 27th after stage 11, and is currently sitting in spot number seven. But nevertheless he has a strong team, featuring Zabel, Mancebo and Valverde as top riders. Trade Teams are his weak point, as "Don Pippo" picked T-Mobile, Team CSC and Cárdenas' Cafés Baque. But should Valverde win the GC battle over Heras, Zabel give some stage winner's points to T-Mobile, and the Colombian mountain goat win the KOM fight, then Philipp could really think big.

The third newcomer into the Fantasy Vuelta top spots is Denmark's Anders Pedersen, who gained 49 points and three positions (11th to 8th) Saturday. And even if he's in a worse position than the previously mentioned contenders, with the Zabel-Valverde-Mancebo trio as well as riders like Moreni, Paolini and Estonian fastman Erki Pütsep his "csc espana" virtual team could gain scores of points in the forthcoming stages.

Both Philipp and Anders are just a few points down on Danny Pate, who retained sixth place overall thanks to four points from the Flying Trullo -as well as Zabel's and Petacchi's small contributions-, and clear of Dave Arnold, whose "muddle headed ones" got points from Zabel only, and moved down four places into ninth. The man close to win the points classification is also likely to get out of the top 10 overall in the next stages. Despite all the points from Roberto Heras (with more of the same to come) Mars Abantao dropped one place, and filled the remaining top 10 spot.

Former GC leader David Schimpf (eight points from Sastre were his stage score) as well as Todd Elenz and John D. Renz moved out of the top 10 spots already. Cyrille Pluijmen made the most out of some good recent results, and notably from the Heras and Luis Pérez points, and pushed his way into the top 15, which is completed by Mads Paulsen (fourth member of the Scandinavian Armada in the top places), leading Jim Klepper by a three-point margin.

Vicente Pérez (42 stage points, mostly from Valverde and Sastre, but one also from new scorer David Blanco) continued his yo-yoing and moved back into the top 20, while American Bill Strachan moved up two places into 18th, not without a huge help from Comunitat Valenciana-Kelme and their team leader. Carl Horton was 19th before the stage ... and still is, while young Peter Hurley slipped three places, but managed to stay inside the top 20, mainly due to Isidro Nozal's 10 points, and in spite of the lack of any support from his "A" pick Vinokourov. With just 2 stage points, all from Kelme's Carlos García Quesada, Chris Knox couldn't remain in the top twenty instead.

As for the Red Lantern battle, points by Nozal and Liberty Seguros, plus one coming from Blanco, prolly took Chris Tunnock out of contention. And winning the last place prize is getting harder also for Beth Lester, eight-point getter (Carlos Sastre is the one to blame) on Saturday. Such that we currently have five serious contenders for the Scott USA kit going to the lanterne rouge winner: Emily Davies, Jim Flaherty (they too got eight stage points, the former from Santi Pérez's Phonak, the latter from Sastre), but especially Bridge Hunter, Andy McDobbin and current farolillo rojo Chris Gunningham, no-scorers Saturday either.
