4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta. Virtual Teams: GC after Stage 12

For the first time since our debut in the Fantasy cycling scene back in the month of July 2001, we have two virtual teams leading with the same score at this stage of the game. In fact it's not a complete tie, as the tie-breaking rules gave the "Virtual Gold Jersey" to just one of them, but it was curious to see that the stage gap between Andreas Lindh and Tim D. Hammer (53 points), was exactly the same as the overall gap between the two guys after the previous leg. The American was leading the Swede by 51 points after he won Tuesday's Stage 11, but as the Vuelta resumed Thursday "Låbbas" earned 53 points (51 from Heras, the rest from Zabel), while "Hammer's Hammers" got just two (from the same "Ete"). If his Zabriskie-based stage win and the consequent bonus points he got made the difference in Hammer's favour in the previous stage, the former USPS rider from Spain gave Lindh enough points to bounce back and nullify the whole gap in one stage.

And not just that: while both players have Landis, Zabel and USPS, Låbbas' third best scorer (needless to say, Roberto Heras) has a better score than Hammer's Zabriskie. Such that as we mentioned above the tie-breaking rules finally awarded Andreas Lindh his first "Virtual Gold Jersey". A jersey he might even keep all the way to the end of the game, as Heras' performance in one of the toughest stages was very promising, especially with so much uphill riding to come. The Roberto Heras show may have just begun. To Andreas Lindh's delight.

As we wrote in our stage 12 report, David Schimpf had an even worse score than Hammer, but whereas the gap to the top two teams increased further, "Team Mafidel" held onto his top 3 spot one more day: Schimpf's closest pursuers, from Melissa Budd to Mark Vandenbergh, didn't fare too well in the stage either: three points were too little for them to move ahead of the American on GC. The Aussie and the Belgian maintained their respective positions, and so did Mel's compatriot Dave Arnold, who got seven points (O'Grady 5, Zabel 2) and brought his gap to "Vdb" down to 2 points.

Besides Lindh, the real winner of the day on GC terms was Marcelino Abantao, who put in another solid performance, added points from Heras and Cárdenas to his previous tally, and moved up thirteen places into 7th. And with both Roberto and the Cafes Baqué Colombian as top riders (along with Floyd Landis) expect the Filipino to make further gains in the forthcoming stages. Yes folks, Abantao is a real overall contender!

Thursday's stage ma rked the beginning of the "second half" of the Vuelta, with the pure climbers like Heras stealing the show from guys like Landis, who were protagonists throughout the first one. And we could notice the first effects in the game too, with James Bass, Chris Knox and Danny Pate ("The Pate" was the only one in the trio able to get -although they were just three- stage points) moving down one place each, even if they remained in the top 10 overall, while Louise Smith, caught and dropped by 1-point getter Richard Dodge, slipped two places into 12th.

We are going to see more and more effects like these in the next stages, but in the meantime we can already notice a few names likely to make the headlines in the second half of the game. Some of them are not new to the spotlight, like Vicente Pèrez, who got 22 stage points and moved from 18th into 13th. With Valverde and Kelme awarding points, the Spaniard can legitimately aim for something better for sure. Some, like Philipp Paier, also burst into the limelight sporadically: "Fassa Pippolo" was stage runner-up three days ago, and after another good result moved into the top 20 spots Thursday. Don Pippo's gap to the current leader is wide, but with top cyclists such as Valverde and Mancebo in his team, the man is entitled to think big. And some never hit the headlines before, like today's stage winner Georg Reidarsen; even if with a line-up containing Heras, Mancebo, Zabel, Sastre and Liberty Seguros "Team Ture", currently sitting in 29th place, but just 58 points away from the Top 10, is likely to have some more satisfactions in the remainder of the contest.

Sure in the forthcoming stages we might see many changes in the top 20 spots, even more than we we could see until now; but there's uncertainty at the bottom of the pack too: the Liberty Seguros showdown on the steep slopes of El Calar Alto earned Chris Tunnock a good 24 points, but at the same time arguably dashed many of his hopes of winning the last place prize: the Aussie moved up five places and is currently leading the brand new Red Lantern holder, Canadian Chris Gunningham, by a 21-point margin (which is a huge gap at the back of the peloton) .

Cunnigham completed his dropping to the bottom of the bunch on Thursday. Curiously "Kwik-E-Mart" got 58 points in the opening TTT, almost two weeks before, but just 8 since, thus going from 43rd to 261st place. With top riders such as Vinokourov, Beloki, Zubeldia and Botero, all of them disappointing, none of them so far able to get any points, it's no surprise that the Canadian is last on GC. And has solid chances of bringing home the Scott USA kit awarded to the final lanterne rouge. But one or more of his "A" or "B" riders could have some redemption ride anyway, or Erik Zabel might win a stage and give Gunningham's "A" Squad T-Mobile eight points, and the red lantern would move to someone else. Maybe someone like Andy McDobbin, one more time zero-point getter in the stage, and one more time back to second last in the overall standings. And one more time hoping that his "Lanterne Rougians" may eventually live up to the team's name.
