4th Fabio's Fantasy Vuelta - Virtual Teams: Stage 8 Results

As fully predicatble, Americans (also used in the broader meaning of "from the Americas") rocked the peloton in Saturday's ITT, both on the road, with Hamilton, Landis and Colombia's Peña, as well as the US Postal squad, dominating the challenge against the clock, and in the game, with the first U.S. victory, coming after seven failed attempts, and just U.S. and Canadian players in the stage top 10.

Less predictably, Saturday's stage winner also set a new record. Actually equalled, as David Schimpf had a record score of 116, getting the same amount of points Israel's Ido Schnitzer (currently not competing) earned in the closing stage of the 2003 Fantasy Vuelta. Such that now the two guys share the best ever score(s) of our Fantasy Cycling competitions.

The "usual suspects" (Hamilton, Landis, VHP, "Triki" and US Postal) provided "Team Mafidel" with no less than 112 points, but that was exactly the score also stage runner-up Chris Knox had. And as is often the case with such situations, despite all the "big scores" from the "big guns" it was a low score from a "minor" rider that determined the stage outcome: well, actually not a really "minor" one, as the cyclist we're talking of is a certain Carlos Sastre, but the 4 stage points he got might be seen as small thing if compared to what the Tylers, VHPs and Floyds earned Saturday. They might be, but in fact they are not, as Sastre is the man that eventually gave Schimpf, a top 3 finisher in the previous "race of the truth", the opening TTT held a week before, a win that would likely make history. Knox and his "ENT" had a stellar score, that would turn a player into stage victor in close to all FG stages. But not this time: with a rival such as David Schimpf, Knox could only get second.

Behind the two dominators of the stage came more and more U.S. and Canadian players, most of whom rarely in the spotlight in the previous legs of this game, but all of whim with more than excellent ITT scores. To start with Brad King, whose "King's Men" earned him a good 100 points. The combination of Nozal and Phonak wasn't enough for him to match the power of the Beltrán/Sastre/USPS trio, but enough to complete Saturday's all-American podium, ahead of another U.S. player, 98-point getter Richard Dodge.

Also Dodge and his closest followers in the stage ranking, Canada's Michael Cairns and Gordon Savage included, had scores that would earn a player stage victory in the overwhelming majority of FG stages but -again- this was no "average" stage, and Dodge, Cairns, Kerndall, Savage, Haugen and the other top players of the day, all of whom with Hamilton, Landis and either Phonak or USPS, didn't even hit the podium, despite their excellent performances. Former KOM leader James Bass also got a top 10 result; the current leaders in the mountains competition, Sergio Zanotti and Michael Hayes, got the same score (77 points, courtesy of Hamilton, Landis and Mancebo). Needless to say, the former got a better placing than the latter also in this case.

Just two European contenders made it into the top 20: England's Phil Coombs, who got the same score as American (cycling fan and writer) Dave Shields, but posted his "On the Rivet" team after "Unble Tubie", and Rene Strandberg, Saturday's best Danish player. And just one more European, FG debutant Eniko Vozar with her "Hungarian" Postal, snatched a top 30 spot. Coombs was also the top "Landis-less" finisher, and Shields the best player with neither USPS nor Phonak in his line-up, while you gotta go down to place number 35 (Mars Abantao - the Philippines - 62 points) to find someone with a different "A" rider than the man from Marblehead, Massachussetts.

The only Colombian in the game, Mario Ballesteros, obviously got 20 points from his talented compatriot, but just 5 more from Zabel, and nothing else, such that unfortunately he couldn't place higher than 121st in the stage classification. His score was certainly better than that of the 21 riders, six of whom from the US, who didn't get any stage points at all anyway.
