Vuelta a Espana Stage 10 Live Coverage

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana.

Please refresh this page (F5) to view the latest information. Commentary today by Bart Hazen, webmaster of the fine website CyclingFX, and Janna Trevisanut.

The 10th stage of Vuelta a España 2004 will take the riders again to Xorret de Catí, a top that, undoubtly, will always remind us of Chava Jiménez. Chava became winner here in 1998 and then, Eladio Jimenez, who rode for Banesto as well, did it in 2000.

This could be considered a half-mountain stage with a third category climb at the very beginning, then a winding part and then the last seventy kilometres with Alto de Tibi, Carrasqueta and finally Alto de Xorret del Catí climbs before descending into Catí. The rider who manages to reach the top with a certain advantage over the main group will have the stage triumph in his hands.

Stage 10: Alcoi - Xorret de Cati, 174.5 km

We join the race in progress. At the moment we have 7 riders in the lead. The 7 are Eladio Jimenez (CV-Kelme), Juan Fuentes, José Miquel Elias, Ruslan Ivanov, Oscar Freire, Erik Zabel and Stuart O'Grady. On a very wet road the lead is around 8.16 on the main bunch.

The peloton is taking it quite easy, and the riders are at 90 km before the finish. The second intermediate sprint in Fontanars was won by Zabel before O'Grady and Freire, the first at Banyeres de Mariola by Freire.

They are now beginning at the 3rd cat. climb of Biar. The best ranked rider in the leading group is Eladio Jimenez (41st at 14.49). Another fact about Eladio Jimenez is that he was winner on Xorret de Cati a couple of years ago, as mentioned above, so he knows the roads of this stage very well.

The other places of the riders in front in the General ranking are:
47º ZABEL, Erik GER TMO a 16:21
51º FREIRE, Oscar ESP RAB a 17:19
52º ELIAS, José Miguel ESP REB a 17:22
85º O'GRADY, Stuart AUS COF a 33:24
112º FUENTES, Juan ESP SAE a 49:21
145º IVANOV, Ruslan MDA ALS a 1:01:41

It looks like that the 7 in front will be away for a while, so we can start talking about some remarkable transfer news of today. Today in the Dutch paper AD (Algemeen Dagblad) there was an article about Koen de Kort and Bas Giling. In it they say that Koen de Kort, now a member of the Rabo Espoir team, will join Manolo Saiz's Liberty Seguros for the next 2 years.

And in the same article they state that Bas Giling will join the magenta team of T-Mobile. He is now also riding, like De Kort, for the Rabo Espoirs. Bas is the present Dutch national champion in the Category Espoirs.

This morning twenty eight riders of Euskaltel, Saeco, T-Mobile and Phonak Hearings System had blood tests and all of them were able to start. The first abandons of today's stage are Fabian Jeker (Saunier-Duval) and Nicolas Jalabert (Phonak).

15.17 CET. The 7 leaders have now a gap of 12.14 on the peloton. It's raining very hard at the moment and there is no one who wants to chase in the peloton.

There is not happening a lot at the moment; it could be a very boring stage till the last climb to Xorret.

On the 3rd category Puerto de Biar, the points for the Mountains jersey are for Relax-Bodysol rider Elias. 2nd was Eladio Jimenez, 3rd R. Ivanov and the last points are for Saeco rider Juan Fuentes.

It has now stopped raining. The teams represented in the break are CV-Kelme, T-Mobile, Rabobank, Relax Bodysol, Cofidis, Saeco and Alessio-Bianchi. The leaders are working well together in the valley; the next climb the Alto de Tibi, 3rd category, will come about 25-30km.

News from the Belgium front: Frank Vandenbroucke, who has to leave Fassa Bortolo after his serious problems of the last weeks, will decide this evening after a kermesse race what he will do in the future. It could well be that he will ride the rest of the season for MrBookmaker.

Readers will recall that he has had some domestic and personal difficulties in the past several months, in addition to problems with his knee.

Freire looks quite good and he is again one of the favorites for the next World Championships in Verona. In 1999, also in Verona, a young and at that moment not so famous Oscar won that championship.

It looks like Oscar Freire put his race shirt in the laundry with his backnumber still on it, because the number isn't very readable today...

Youngster David Fernández of Paternina, who slid out on a curve yesterday, has had to consult the race doctors today about the bruising he received in the fall. He caught some gravel on an inside curve and slid hard on the road. We hope he is all right.

Another transfer comes from Italy. Brasilian sprinter Luciano Pagliarini of Lampre is joining the new Italian Liquigas team next year. Pagliarini changes teams because Lampre will probably not get the last ticket for the Pro Tour.

15.44 CET. Less than 70 km to go. And now the peloton awakes - Piepoli's Saunier Duval team is chasing. Piepoli achieved a personal milestone yesterday when he won Stage 9, his first grand tour win. Will Piepoli win the stage again? Or might teammate Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero have a good day. Perdi has had an excellent season.

The whole Saunier Duval team, except Fabian Jeker who abandoned earlier today, is now leading the tempo of the peloton. The teams of US Postal, Liberty and Illes Baleares are riding just behind Saunier.

60 km to go. The leaders are now beginning at the 3rd cat. climb the Alto de Tibi. This climb is about 4,5 km in distance and isn't that difficult. After this though are a cat 2 and then a cat 1 climb.

Juan Fuentes is leading the tempo on the Alto de Tibi. The gap is now 13.12.

With less than 60 km to go and with this gap, I think the winner is one of the 7 in front. The seven are Zabel (T-Mobile), O'Grady (Cofidis), Freire (Rabobank), Ruslan Ivanov (Alessio-Bianchi), Juan Fuentes (Saeco), Eladio Jimenez (CV-Kelme) and Elias (Relax-Bodysol).

The race organizers had hoped to pay tribute to José María Jiménez on the category 1 Xorret del Catí mountain today, where he won in 1998, but Chava's widow did not wish for such an activity to take place, so it will not.

Saunier Duval stops chasing. The gap is growing, now 13.30.

While the peloton could be waiting for the natural attrition that occurs with serious climbs, I think it will be a race in a race. The 7 for stage win and the others in the pack for the leader's jersey. It's not likely that this size gap will be brought down in the 50 some kilometers that are left.

In fact, the pack is now "walking" and the riders are having a nice friendly chat with each other.

Some riders are taking the time now to have a sanitary stop. Due the slow tempo in the pack, the gap is now 14.30. And in front Zabel has a flat tire, but comes back. Quite a fine looking break today, with O'Grady, Zabel and Freire - we are more used to seeing less well known names in escape groups.

"Ete" is back in front again, while Elias takes the points on the Tibi before Eladio and Freire.

With Eladio Jimenez close to being the virtual Golden Jersey on the road (he is 14.49 down), the pack realize that they have to do something and Liberty Seguros starts chasing again. With Roberto Heras and Isidro Nozal they have 2 men for the General Ranking, while Heras could win the stage too.

Speak of the devil, Eladio Jimenez almost missed a turn because the descent off the Tibi is very difficult.

16.05 CET. Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano is leading the Liberty Seguros train in the front of the peloton. The peloton is at 60 km to go while the 7 riders in front are at 52 km before the finish on Xorret the Cati.

Eladio isn't doing so well in the descents because he takes the turns improperly - he has almost missed some of them...

Meanwhile, in the back, Petacchi has to let go of the pack and 5 of his teammates (except TerminAitor, Gustov and maybe Cioni) are waiting. But not only Petacchi - also a lot of other riders, like Astarloa, Jaksche, Caucchioli and Julia are losing touch. The pace of Liberty Seguros is very high. The peloton is now on the climb of the Tibi.

Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano still in front of the Liberty train, while up ahead, the leaders are now beginning the Puerto de la Carrasqueta of 2nd Cat. This climb is about 15 km in distance.

The pack is now at the top of the Tibi at 12.43 behind the leaders. The average after 3 hours of racing is 39,8km/h. Not a blistering pace...

In the descent of the Tibi, Joseba Beloki has almost a deja vu from his crash in the Tour. In a turn he has to correct a bit to not go down when a rider just in front of him makes a "sweep" - the rider grabbed the handlebars because the tempo was very slow, and Joseba hit almost his back wheel, forcing Joseba to react.

16.20 CET. Less than 50km to go. After the Puerto de la Carrasqueta, the riders will be in a descent (for around 30 km) and then will start the last climb to Xorret.

Joseba Beloki had to let go the pack too in the descent of the Tibi with about 20 other riders, including also Alberto Martinez, Florencio, Andrle, and some young Dutch riders. Just call it the group Beloki. Meanwhile, Liberty Seguros still in the lead of the peloton and just behind the Spanish team rides Floyd Landis, the leader in the general ranking.

As I can see now, Floyd has only Benoit Joachim and "Triki" Beltran as teammates in the main bunch. It looks like David Blanco, 10th of the General Ranking, is riding back in the Group Beloki too.

The 7 leaders now have a gap of 10.50 on the pack. I believe Cadel Evans had to let go the pack too.

Up ahead, Stuart O'Grady is asking his team director in the car behind him what kind of roads they have to do - because he was looking into the road book.

Juan Fuentes looks strong today, but that isn't that strange, because Fuentes and Jimenez are the better climbers of the 7 on paper.

16.34 CET. 37 km to go. Elias takes the points on the Carrasqueta before Jimenez. Because Elias has taken all climb points he is now the new "virtual" leader in the mountain ranking.

Liberty Seguros is chasing with 4 riders. I'll guess the pack is about 60 riders strong. Laszlo Bodrogi, the Hungarian rider of Quick-Step, has abandoned too.

The 7 leaders have taken a wrong turn but they are on the right path again. But they have lost about 1.00 due to this, I'll guess.

16.44 CET. The gap is now about 8.00. Laiseka, the climber of Euskaltel, has some problems following the main pack on the Carrasqueta. Atienza of Cofidis is also trying not to lose contact with the pack. Up ahead, the leaders are still working well together.

At the Carrasqueta the 3rd place was taken by Juan Fuentes. The gap is now 8.38. Elias was first, Jimenez second.

It looks like the leaders didn't take a wrong turn, but were taking a shorter way on that road (a roundabout). 23 km to go.

16.55 CET. With around 20 km to go, the leaders have 8.10 still. In the pack it's still Igor who's working.

At about 10 km there is the last intermediate sprint and after that sprint they will begin at the climb of Xorret de Cati.

The pack is now in Ibi, at 23km from the finish. The skies are still dark, but it does not appear wet at the moment. Hruska has taken over the job of Igor and is now leading the pace.

15 km to go. At about 8 km the climb will start. The top of that climb is at 3km before the finish - then a short descent and the short climb to Cati. The pack is riding through town. The gap is now 7.40.

The stage winner is now definitely one of the seven...

17.06 CET. 12 km to go. Tyler Hamilton is coming to the front now, too. At the finish it starts raining - the gap is now 7.28.

The peloton is now at 15 km before the finish - it's raining very hard now. It's also very windy - very bad weather at the moment, with less then 10 km to go. Zabel won the last intermediate sprint ahead of O'Grady and Jimenez.

The leaders are now on the climb of Xorret the Cati, a category 1 climb. 7 km to go.

The peloton is taking it quite easy in the turns through town now, with this bad weather. Up ahead, Fuentes and Elias attack. Fuentes is riding away from Elias.

Fuentes is riding very well, and in the pack CV-Kelme is now leading the pace. 6 km to go for the leaders. Fuentes has now 5 sec. on the others.

O'Grady has caught Fuentes, 2 men in the lead. The road is soaking wet. The rest come back.

Kelme is riding fast in the pack, will Valverde try something?

Fuentes attacks again - Eladio Jimenez too. It's hard to see on the road... Eladio attacks and Fuentes loses contact. Freire is doing quite well.

The pack now begins the climb. Ahead, Jimenez is not riding away and it looks like Freire is coming back.

5 km to go - 2km to the top of the Xorret.

There are good, though wet, crowds along the climb. The leaders are now on the difficult part of the climb - out of the saddle, rocking side to side...Eladio has 50 mt on Freire. The difficult part of the climb has passed.

In the peloton nothing is happening so far. But as I said Valverde was attacking - Nozal, Heras, Piepoli and Ferrio are riding to Valverde. Ferrio attacks and Nozal has to pass, it looks like a "parkeggio."

4 km to go for the leaders, in the pack Landis in difficulty. Pieter Weening is trying to follow Landis and Beltran. Also TerminAitor tried it.

Heras has some problems too, to follow Valverde. Heras comes back. Eladio Jimenez is on his way to winning again the stage on Xorret the Cati...

Jimenez is at the top of the climb and he has 3km left.

The other leaders are out of the saddle while Eladio is now in the descent. Behind, Ferrio is riding away from Valverde, Heras and Piepoli. The gaps between the groups aren't known.

Nozal is coming back at the 3 with Valverde - so here is the race within the race. Nozal looks very strong, gritting his teeth in characteristic fashion.

Now Nozal has lost contact again. Past the Flamme Rouge at the front of the race, Eladio Jimenez crosses the finish line and wins again the stage on Xorret the Cati on a magnificent way. O'Grady in 2nd at 31 sec. Freire 3rd at 47 sec and Ivanov 4th. Fuentes 5th at 1.03. Elias 6th at 1.10.

And now we wait for the bunch - the group Valverde is in the last 2km now.

Landis is now at the top of the climb. Zabel crosses 7th at 1.50. This is a skinny mountain road surrounded by scrub. Last km for the 3 with Valverde and Heras.

Names painted on the road - Mancebo, Mancebo, Mancebo. Ferrio in 8th at 4.05. And now - Valverde and Heras cross in the same time, Piepoli 10 at 4.17.

Sastre 11th at 4.45. Nozal 12, Cunego 13, Hamilton 14, Mancebo 15 all at 39 sec. of Valverde. Landis is finished and remains in the lead, with a few seconds, we're guessing. Menchov loses 6.06 on Jimenez, so he lost more than 1.00 on Valverde. Piepoli was also in same time as Roberto and Alejandro.

General Classification - Landis leads Valverde at 8, Mancebo at 28, Nozal at 31, Heras at 46 and Triki at 59. The next GC places are Sastre 7th, Menchov 8th, Aitor Gonzalez 9th and Angel Gomez 10th.
