Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 6

This year’s Tour de l’Avenir has already been a rewarding race for Brioches la Boulangere, after three sprint victories from Sébastien Chavanel. Yet yesterday, it got even better. Early on, a two man breakaway got away consisting of South African Daniel Spence (Team HSBC) and Baker Boy Christophe Kern got away. In a stage with several climbs, including a tough Cat 3 – the Cote du Mont Saint-Quentin - just 6km from the finish, the Frenchman led his companion over the three climbs before the decisive last one.

With 25km to go before the finish in Metz, the peloton were 4’25” in arrears to the duo in front and the panic bells were beginning to ring as the catch looked unlikely. Just before the Cat 3 kicked in, with 15km left, Kern cleverly surged, sensing Spence weakening, and left his companion to toil on the climb (he would later be swallowed up by the peloton). Cresting the climb with 6km to go, the young Brioches rider had 2 minutes on Relax-Bodysol’s Moises Duenas Nevado, who took a flyer off the front of the peloton.

The 23 year old in front had much time to celebrate his first victory of the season, and second of his career after last year’s GP Rudy Dhaenens. There were more celebrations from Kern’s delighted team, who’d wrapped up their fourth win in this event so far! Behind, Duenas Nevado just staved off the peloton to take second and bolster his overall position, with hardened Dutch fast man Theo Eltink sprinting to third from a small group – and on the back was Thomas Lovkvist. With yellow jersey Gustavo Lemos 10 seconds behind him in the peloton, it meant the Swede – a revelation this season – takes over the lead. Meanwhile, the USA’s hope Tyler Farrar disappointingly lost one minute to the pack.
