4th Fabio's Fantasy Tour: Riders - Stage 12 Results

And it's IVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN BAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSOOOOOOOOOO!!!! After getting some decent results in past editions of Le Tour, but without outstanding performances, the Lombard rider, now at Team CSC, finally came out with a bang in the first real uphill stage of the 2004 Grande Boucle, and put in a helluva attack to get the biggest win in his career (so far at least).

The 26-year-old from Cassano Magnago, on the outskirts of Varese, a World Champion (in the Under 23 RR) at Valkenburg in the year 1998, was the only rider able to remain on the wheels of His Majesty Lance Armstrong when the American, already pedalling towards a sixth consecutive TdF overall win, sped his pace on the slopes leading up to La Mongie. The two stayed together until the line then, as it often happens when the yellow jersey (or main GC contender) is in the break with another rider ... "another rider" crossed first and raised his arms in triumph. And won the stage in this game too!

And Armstrong? Runner-up both on the road and here, he scored for the third day in a row, as he's likely to do more and more and more times in the coming stages. And his sixth TdF success is not far away, especially if those who were supposed to be his key rivals, Jan Ullrich and Tyler Hamilton, should falter again the way they did today. The German bonked big style on the final ascent (somehow similarly to what occurred in a Tour de Suisse stage in June, but then he managed to win the race by a mere second) and the Bostonian did even worse, as he lost about 03'30" to Ivan and Lance. That means neither "A" player has been capabale of providing the dozens of players who picked'em with any points thus far. Sure both will be given some chances for redemption in stages to come. But in the meantime all those who opted for Armstrong can legitimately rejoice (even more if they chose Basso as one of the "B" riders).

Something those who picked Iban Mayo would hardly do instead: the Basque gained some points at last, but no more than 2, and that's less than what many expected from the man who dominated most of the races he took part in over the past two months; while Other Spanish climbers, from Sastre to Mancebo to Pereiro Sio, did better than him Friday.

Kudos to Andreas Klöden, third place finisher in the stage, and Michele Scarponi, whose Top 10 reslult earned the FG players that picked him some more points. And Kudos to Thomas Voeckler, the gutsy Alsatian who fought bravely to save his GC lead, and succeeded, such that the man is still more than five minutes clear of Armstrong. He's gonna surrender the jersey either tomorrow or during the final week, but in the meantime ... 13 more points for the boy (who's still atop the Best Young Rider Classification too), and his overall score going up to a sensational 127! Wow! Voeckler displayed an excellent condition in the weeks before Le Tour, that's true, and also captured the French RR title, but who thought the man could go so far? Kudos to Virenque, who continued his Polka-Dot Adventure, while his rival Moreau got his first point in the KOM challenge, and kudos to Robbie McEwen, unchallenged leader of the Points Competition.

And last but not least, kudos to Team CSC. Bjarne Riis' crew had Friday's stage winner (Basso) in the roster, and also increased their lead in the TdF's Trade Teams Ranking, such that they gained 14 points, and are now just one point (79-78) behind the USPS powerhouse, which seemed unbeatable when they won the Team Time Trial nine days ago.
