4th Fabio's Fantasy Tour: Riders - Stage 9 Results

Cycling is a cruel sport sometimes. Two brave guys break away early in the stage, lead the bunch by no less than 10 minutes with 60k to go, stay clear for more than 120 kms against a fast flying (in the final part of the race at least) peloton, and still keep a fifteen-second margin with one mere, single km. to the line. But then, in the last mere, damn km, the drama comes: one of the two escapees keeps turning his head a bit too much, and this sure doesn't help, while the other stops taking turns and opts for staying on his wheels, with the intention to save some energies for the two-man sprint.

But that kind of sprint never came, as despite a late, desperate attempt from Iñigo Landaluze, the adventure of the Basque and the other brave (but a bit innoncent, I have to say) rider in the break, Italy's Filippo Simeoni, came to end at 60 metres from the line, when the peloton swallowed both of them, and just like it happened in a Giro stage, when Alessandro Petacchi got boxed by his own leadoutmen, accomplished Robbie McEwen was good at making the most out of someone else's mistakes (and his own sprinting skills) and captured his second win in the 2004 Tour de France as he came out in the very last centimetres, while everything the duo that stole the show for mor than 120 kms got was Landaluze's tenth place (and his first point in the game).

It may be cruel, it may be unfair, but that's cycling, folks! So hats off to the Aussie, who added 36 points (also courtesy of his strengthened leadership in the Tour's Points competition) and took his tally to an excellent 167 although, unbelievable but true, no players are going to benefit from that! Instead many a good participants will enjoy points from the men McEwen pipped on the line, and leads in the GC too: Thot Hushovd (runner-up in the stage, but also in the Rider Standings with 132 points) and Stuart O'Grady (third-placed in both Rankings). Four more guys are no longer in the race: the much talked-about Martin Hvastija and Stefano Casagranda, but also France's Samuel Domoulin and Estonian sprinter Jaan Kirsipuu who, as he's used to do, got into his team car and pulled out of Le Tour before the mountains. But not before providing all Fantasy Game players that picked him with a good 51 points.
