Young Guns: 34th Giro d’Italia Under 26 - Stage 6

The 34th Baby Giro. or the "Tour of brothers and cousins". After Marco Bertoletti, younger brother of Lampre's Simone Bertoletti, captured the race opener at Marina di Ravenna five days before, Wednesday it was the turn of Bruno Bertolini, younger brother of Acque & Sapone's professional rider Denis Bertolini, and cousin af Alessio-Bianchi's Alessandro Bertolini, to have his day of glory. The 23-year-old from Rovereto (Trentino region), who celebrated his birthday just a week ago, didn't waste the penultimate chance the fastmen were given in this race, and won the bunch sprint at the end of the all-Lombard stage covering 163.8 km. between Camuno (Brescia province) and Gerenzago, on the outskirts of Pavia. Bertolini is a teammate of Alessandro Bertuola, who finished inside the peloton and comfortably kept his overall leaderhsip. The man still leads fellow Italian Nicola Del Puppo by 01'27"; Ivan Stevic of Serbia-Montenegro follows 02'12" behind.

It was an average "transfer" stage, coming both after and before some more difficult legs, and with a pancake flat route, although the heat made things a bit harder for the peloton, that covered 38 kms in the first hour of racing. Then came the first attacks, courtesy of Slovenia's Matej Mugerli and some eight more riders, who were pulled back into the peloton anyway and, after Maglia Rosa holder Bertuola punctured at Soncino (km 87), but quickly regained the bunch, another breakaway group formed, containing Austrian Harald Starzengruber (Unione Ciclisti Trevigiani Dynamon) as well as Italy's Luca Amoriello (GS Zalf Desirée Fior) and Angelo Ciccone (Marchiol Famila Site). They didn't put more than 32” into the field, and were swallowed by the pack a few kms later.

A more serious attempt came at km. 115, with ten riders (Australian Nicolas Sanderson, Germany's Hendrik Werner, Uzbekistan Denis Sharkpeta and Italy's Maserati, De Nobile, Colli, Da Dalto, Buoso, Bellin and Rasioni) breaking away and quickly taking significant time out of the bunch. But as the gap ballooned to 01'35", the pack reacted, and their serious chasing efforts bore fruit with 12 km. to go, when the peloton was together again.

So it all came down to a massive sprint finish, with Bertolini powering to victory despite a late move by Gene Bates, that was chased down, and in front of Diego Caccia of Bottoli Artoni-Zoccorinese and Luca Amoriello of GS Zalf, while red hot favourite Mattia Gavazzi couldn't get higher than fourth. Australians Kemps and Bates took 7th and 8th respectively, after Paride Grillo was relegated to last (119th) place for irregular sprinting.

It was a well-earned victory, the first so far this season, and definitely a huge moral boost for Bertolini who, as the man himself admitted in post-race talks, even thought of hanging up his bike, because of serious knee problems that have been affecting him for years. But in the end he found the right motivation and grinta to keep riding, and Wednesday's victory, coming no more than one month after he was back in the saddle, was a more than excellent payback for him.

If the Maglia Rosa contenders saved their legs on the way to the Gerenzago sprint, things should take a different turn Thursday: after a long transfer to Tuscany, the Baby Giro resumes with a more demanding stage of 170 kms, starting at Andrea Tafi's hometown Lamporecchio, and finishing into Cerbaia (Pistoia province), after tackling the San Baronto climb thrice, and more KOM Primes (Toiano, Serravalle Pistoiese and Fornello) once.
