GIRO Stage 2 - Live Ticker & Result

Welcome to live coverage of stage 2 of the Giro we join the race as an attack by Popovych and Vierhouten is pulled back by the peloton. With 20 kms to go they are all back together.

Peace race fans may like to know that Przydzial and Sosenka (CCC) have just won the king stage! Meanwhile, back in Belgium, Saeco have taken the front of the peloton, on this course which basically follows Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Earlier on, Ivan Gotti, Bo Hambruger (Index-Alexia), and Julio Perez Cuapio touched wheels and fell into a ditch. "Lucky " Perez is living up to his nickname! The peloton is all together and the pace has slowed with no team really taking up the race.

The pace now picks up with Coast team, perhaps still annoyed about not being chosen for the TdF, string the peloton out.

Gotti seems to be in big trouble now as the Peloton winds it way past the famous football stadium. Lotto and Mapei at the front.

Casagrande launches an attack, Garzelli marks him out as they start the ascent.

Bettini has mechanical trouble! Gasagrande is piling on the pressure, there are just three men with him.

5 km to go: Casagrande, Garzelli, Boogerd, with three riders coming up.

3 kms to go the leaders have 26 seconds Boogerd, Verbrugghe, Casagrande, Garzelli, Hamilton and Kessler.

At the final climb, no place for faint hearts, Perez the Kelme rider is on fire at the front, but Garzelli steals the victory in a great sprint finish!

Cipollini is still climbing the hill so has lost the pink jersey which will go to Garzelli.
