Giro d'Italia Stage 14 Live Coverage

Welcome to the Daily Peloton's coverage of Stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia.

From our Giro d'Italia introduction:
Sunday, May 23 the peloton will say arrivederci to Italy in the morning, and move into foreign territory for the only abroad stage finish of the Giro. Stage 14 covers 166 km. between Trieste and the Istrian hamlet of Pula (Croatia), passing through both Slovenian and Croatian territory. A tribute to young nations that are getting closer to becoming part of the “European Family”, and somehow also a way to remember poor Dennis Zanette, that won the stage the last time Italy's GT hit Slovenian soil (on May 29, 2001: Zanette, then racing for Liquigas, soloed to victory after breaking away from a small bunch with 5k to go).

The first part is quite undulating, and could help any volunteer wishing to have a go at making a break. But as the stage progresses into Croatian soil, in the Istrian inland, and the road gets flatter on the way to Pula (Pola in Italian language, still spoken in an area that was part of Italy until the end of WWII), just to end in a final circuit around this Adriatic seaside town, making it to the line would be hard for any breakaway group or rider.

We join the race in progress and our commentary today is by Jan Janssens. Please refresh this page (F5) to view the latest information.

In today's hilly stage we currently have 3 leaders: Marzoli (Acqua & Sapone), Illiano (Colombia Selle Italia) and Muraglia (Formaggi Pinzolo). They have a 2.50 lead over the peloton at the moment.

50 km to go. The lead of the three is slowly melting, at 2.35 now, because the Fassas are chasing in the peloton. They're looking for another Petacchi show, methinks!

For many sprinters, including Robbie "all tricks" McEwen, this is the last day to score a stage win with the big mountains up ahead, so it wouldn't surprise me if Lotto would start lending a hand to the Fassas later on.

Two riders didn't start today: sprinter Klemencic and climber Montgomery. Not unsurprisingly for Montgomery who had a nasty fall yesterday in the ITT and hurt his shoulder. He's very unlucky though, because it seemed like he was wiping out his disappointing season of last year... This brings the number of riders still competing down to 150 from the original 169.

We see Ukrainian Chocolade Jacques rider Maxim Rudenko rubbing his upper thigh, he's probably suffering from cramps. Cramps can be an horrific thing for a rider, as we might remember from Thor Hushovd in the Tour...even guys that are strong as an ox like Thor get 'em!

42 km to go. 1.58 left for the three leaders.

The first two weeks of this year's Giro have been the terrain of the young guns...until an old Ukrainian won the TT of course. But we had Cunego, Sella, D'Amore, Gilbert, and Popovych...all between 20 and 25 years old! Apologies to any rider I left out...

After yesterday's TT, Oz hardman Brad McGee revealed that he had secretly been hoping to reclaim the Maglia Rosa, but the Ukrainian powers that be had decided otherwise. He said that he didn't take any risks with the rain, after his DS Gayant had told him to be careful several times, but he was very happy with his performance, because it was the first time that he had ridden for victory in a TT of that length.

The lead is still slowly dropping, 1.20 left for the Italian trio of Marzoli, Muraglia and Illiano.

22 km to go. The race reaches the town of Fazana, still Fassa leading the peloton, with Lotto ready to take over, as we expected.

1.22 left still for the three leaders.

Yesterday's stage winner Sergeï Honchar proclaimed it to be a great day for both Ukrainian cycling and his small team De Nardi. Apparently there is 1.5 hours of Giro coverage a day in Ukraine, so his family and friends could all witness his trumph live!

In the Tour of Belgium, Leukemans has won the queen stage. Sylvain Chavanel takes the overall.

After a bit of hesitation at first, the Lottos are now fuly cooperating with the Fassas, and the leaders now have 53 seconds left.

15 km to go. The race has travelled into cloud cover now; earlier it was bright sun with dark clouds in the distance.

The riders are now in the finishing town of Pula, riding on the city circuit.

The three leaders will be caught in a moment by the peloton as they have only 10 seconds left. The race is on the first of two local rounds.

Apparently Sven Montgomery broke his shoulder yesterday.

If he wins his seventh, Petacchi can become co-record holder today for the number of stage wins in one Giro, together with Merckx, De Vlaeminck and Saronni. That's nice company to be in!

If Petacchi can get to the same speed as he did the other day there'll be no passing him...when he saw that McEwen was nearing, he put it up another notch, getting to a monstrous max speed of 71.2 km/h!!! 71.2 km/h is a speed you normally speaking only see on the track.

We're in the last local round now, 6kms to go! The three have been caught, the entire peloton is now racing towards the finish line under the command of the Fassas.

5kms to go, McEwen has Petacchi's wheel. An attack from Tenax rider Nicola Loda. 4 to go.

He gets the company of De nardi's Gasparre. Seems like the lesser sprinters are trying new tricks to surprise Petacchi, 3 kms to go.

The last straight line towards the finish goes slightly downwards, so postioning is very important today! McEwen has lost Petacchi's wheel, we see Usov and Backstedt in front.

It's Olaf "Poulidor" Pollack that has Petacchi's wheel now, McEwen is a few places back in Naudusz's wheel. The two have been caught again.

Rodriguez moving to the front now. 2 kms to go. The Fassa train taking hold of the command again.

Now Rodriguez and Furlan fighting for Petacchi's wheel. Final km.

McEwen is too far behind, he's done for. 400 meters. Crash! Petacchi sprints to the line, Rodruiguez is coming closer but doesn't come over Petacchi! Petacchi wins his 7th!!

Behind the two there's no one, because the crash caused a gap, seems like it was Cadamuro that slipped away. I even think Petacchi's lead-out man Velo has grabbed third.

Petacchi equals Saronni, Merckx and De Vlaeminck - wow...and also important, he beats Cipo's streak.

It wasn't Cadamuro who slipped and crashed, but Gasparre.

Petacchi says to the interviewer that he's made history today, and that he equals his hero Beppe Saronni 24 years after him.

Thankfully that the crash didn't seem to really affect anyone, it "just" disrupted the sprint.

The top places are: 1) Petacchi, 2) Rodriguez, 3) Velo, 4) Pollack, 5) Usov, 6) Svorada, 7) Pagliarini.

We hope you are enjoying this Giro as much as we are! Tomorrow is one for the sprinters - another almost completely flat stage. Please join us right here and thanks for reading today.
