87th Giro d'Italia Stage 12 Live Coverage

Hello and welcome to Stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia, Cesena - Treviso, 216 Km.

Fabio wrote last fall in our Giro d'Italia presentation about today's stage:
Do not expect any big move from any big gun in the following Stage 12, that covers 216 km. between Cesena and Treviso on Friday, May 21. That’s pure sprinter territory: the route is pan flat, and should provide one of the last chances for the flatlanders to take a victory. And with the Fassa Bortolo firm (and squad) headquartered in the area, Alessandro Petacchi should be ultra-determined to pay tribute to his team and give them a well-earned victory on ”home soil”.

We join the race in progress. Please refresh this page (F5) to view the latest information.

59km . There are three men off the front on the attack. They are Geert Steegmans (Lotto-Domo), Leonardo Scarselli (Colombia - Selle Italia), and Radoslav Rogina (Tenax).

They are pushing along on this flat stage. And boy, it's flat. The profile of this stage is flatter than a teenage supermodel.

The race today started without Massimo Iannetti (Domina Vacanze), who was the youngest rider in this Giro. He crashed on a descent yesterday, but still toughed it out to finish the stage. Iannetti was favoring his shoulder during the stage, and after he finished the race (what a trooper) he was transported to a hospital in Cesena. Examination revealed a right side clavicle fracture.

Fassa Bortolo is on the front of the peloton in force. Four Fassa riders are trailed by several Lotto-Domo riders who all want to bring this to together for a big sprint finish. Petacchi is still well ahead in the Ciclamino Jersey, but he wants more stage wins. When it comes to sprints, he's a greedy, greedy man.

50km left. The peloton is moving at a good clip, but the hammer is not fully down yet. The three men in the break are still working well together.

After his dramatic stage win yesterday, the 22 year-old Emanuele Sella commented that, "When I took off I didn't have any thought of winning, I only wanted to enliven things and help my teammate Figueras. I will need to go to sleep, then wake up tomorrow and read the newspaper headlines to really believe what happened."

He went on to say that, "And to think that they wanted to stop me. In my earphone they were shouting at me: 'Are you crazy? Do you think you're Pantani?' I read the road and thought about when Marco took off in the Alps. Toward the end it seemed as if I were him, even if it was not at all the same thing, because nobody will ever succeed in repeating his achievements."

Interesting that his team was dissuading him... it seemed part of an organized team plan, but obviously it wasn't.

In the future, they probably won't dissuade him from attacking.

The gap is now to 2' 10" for the three breakaways.

This is a good move by Lotto-Domo. By putting Steegmans in this break, they have forced Fassa Bortolo to do all the work of chasing today. Steegmans actually appears to be a passenger in this break now, just sitting on the back and doing no work.

Cunego is looking comfortable in his Pink Jersey. The Saeco train is right behind the Fassa and Lotto trains at the front of the pack. Cunego, who rode with the 22 year old stage winner Sella on the Zalf-Fior team, said: "Cycling is seeing a wave of renewal. I am happy to have brought the pink jersey to Cesena, the land of Pantani, of whom I have a poster in my room. Marco was a boy like us and everybody misses him. I knew today that we would have to work hard, but we have succeeded by tooth and nail. The Giro will change with the time trial (Saturday). But I still want to fight for a little bit."

The men in the Saeco train pull up a bit and begin conversing with the men in the Fassa train. They are probably talking about how cool it is to dominate a race like the Giro... these teams have been on the front of the pack most of the race.

The gap to the leaders is down to 1' 45".

40km left. Not sure if the gap is coming down because of pressure from Fassa Bortolo or because Steegmans has quit working.

Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) took the Green climber's Jersey yesterday. He's having a great ride in this Giro for a rookie.

35km left. Hmmm... the conversation between Fassa and Saeco has led to the Saeco boys now mixing in and helping them with the chase. Tomorrow, of course, the big boys on Saeco will be trying to defend their GC positions on that long, long time trial. There is one climb on the course, which will help their cause.

Tonti is on the front for Saeco. He has a blue bandage on his left knee from that crash where Cipollini went down. Tonti went over the top and broke his forks, and received some road rash. At the back of the peloton, a Domina Vacanze man slows and drifts to the side of the road, trying to pick up some points in the "King of the Bushes" competition. Don't get it caught in your spokes, mate!

Rogina leads the way through the Intergiro point, winning that sprint. Then, immediately after, Steegmans attacks and drops the two other men in the breakaway.

The peloton is stretching out with the pace that is being set. It's getting to the point where the lolligagging stops and the hammer goes down in earnest.

Steegmans has about 1' 15" on the peloton. Rogina and Scarselli are just a few seconds behind Steegmans.

FDJeux.com has moved a few men up near the front, likely looking after the flying Brad McGee.

25km left Rogina and Scarselli look to have sat up, and they are about to be caught by the peloton. Steegmans' lead is down to about 45".

20km left. The gap is down to 35".

Steegmans is making sure that Fassa Bortolo has to work as long as possible to chase.

15km left. So it's all back together, and Steegman's escapade is over.

Fassa Bortolo is hammering home at the front. Now the scrum for position behind Petacchi has begun in earnest. All the big sprinters (and not-so-big ones too) are scrambling and banging elbows, looking for the right wheels. Alessio has several men next to the Fassa train, likely working for Furlan or Backstedt.

10km left. Fassa still has control. FDJeux.com, Lotto-Domo, Alessio, Tenax, and Vini Caldirola all have small knots of riders near the front.

7km left. Alessio is mixing in with the Fassas. Cunego and Simoni are near the front, out of trouble. Now an attack from a Formaggi Pinzolo man. It's Domenico Gualdi.

5km left. Gualdi only has about 100m on the field. It doesn't look like it will last. Of course today's stage would have been perfect for his teammate Quaranta; unfortunately, he crashed out of the race a few days ago.

Domina Vacanze are now moving up to help set up Nauduzs, putting men on the front. Furlan and Backstedt are right near the front for Alessio.

3km left. Backstedt is on the front driving it now. I think I saw Fred Rodriguez near Petacchi's wheel.

Rodriguez is right behind McEwen, who is banging shoulders with Pollack fighting for Petacchi's wheel. Nauduzs is right near the wheel of Petacchi too. What a fight for position this is!

Final kilometer. The Fassa leadout is intact. Two before Petacchi. Now Velo is on the front, driving it. McGee has jumped them all. This has thrown off the sprint. A crash!

Petacchi wins it! A Vini Caldirola man went down. It was Marco Zanotti, their sprinter. He went down at speed, and he's in pain.

Now he's been helped to his feet. He's trying to walk it off.

Petacchi won it, McEwen 2nd, a Phonak rider (Murn?) was 3rd.

So the Fassa leadout was disrupted by Brad McGee attacking with about 600m left. Furlan got onto McGee's wheel flying up the left side of the road, while Petacchi's leadout was up the right side. When McGee passed Velo, Petacchi jumped over to the wheel of Furlan.

Then he jumped out on the left, hit the wind, opened his mouth to gulp the air and flew away to the line for his sixth win of this Giro.

That was a brilliant sprint. Petacchi had to adapt and make the right decisions in a heartbeat. He read it perfectly, jumped on the right wheel, and put the wood to everyone once again.

Zanotti went into the barriers on the right side of the road with about 400m left. By that time Petacchi and many of the others were already over to the left side of the road.

McEwen followed Petacchi, tried to come around him on the right, but could never even get past his rear derailleur.

Usov was third, 4th Klemencic, 5th Pollack.

Petacchi swigs some champagne with the models. He's probably enjoying himself now, because tomorrow he's not going to be anywhere near the leaders in the time trial.

For the record, this is Stage 12, and Petacchi has won HALF of the road stages so far. Now that is studly.

Simoni lost 6 seconds on today's stage, but the GC remains the same. Thanks for joining us today, and be sure to tune in for the 52 km time trial tomorrow, when there is sure to be a GC shakeup.
