Good day and welcome to Stage 11 of the 87th Giro d'Italia!
Here is the discussion of Stage 11 from our Giro preview last fall:
One of the most unusual features of the 2004 Giro route is the presence of a
town hosting two consecutive stage starts: after getting on their bikes in Porto
San Elpidio on Tuesday, riders will indeed get back to the same place 24 hours
later, this time to head due north towards Cesena. Whereas the previous leg was
among the shortest, Stage 11 covers 229 km. and is the second longest one in the
2004 Tour of Italy.
But not the easiest for sure. After a first, flat part alongside the Adriatic
coast, the peloton has to tackle a km. 5.3 long ascent (whose average gradient
hovers around 5.3%) in the San Marino Republic (the most ancient Republic on the
planet; legend says it was founded by a Croatian monk more than 1700 years ago),
then ride back into Italian territory, and find more up-and-down roads in the
last 40 km., just before the final descent on the way to Cesena.
According to race boss Carmine Castellano, this one bears resemblances to
Apennine Mountain stage from Montecatini to Faenza, where Gilberto Simoni
surprised everyone as he launched a successful attack where nobody expected him
to. So if you think that’s just a day for the stage hunters and second-string
riders to go for some glory, facts might (just might, eh!) prove you
We join the race in progress, please refresh this page (F5) to view the latest information.
There is a large group up the road right now as we start the coverage. The lone leader is Emanuele Sella (Ceramiche Panaria), who bridged the gap to the front group and has now left them behind by 15". He is chased by about a dozen men, and then a few minutes behind is the peloton.
40km left. Leonardo Bertagnolli (Saeco) leads the fractured chase group, which is now down to four men. Back in the peloton, Saeco is leading the chase at 2' 55" behind Sella.
Whoa! Sella lost it in a corner and went off into the grass. He's now back up and riding, he hasn't been caught by the chasers. Whoa, the chasers almost lost it too. Francisco Vila (Lampre) who is in the back of that chase group, really almost went into the ditch.
Now there is another crash on that same corner. It's Massimo Iannetti (Domina Vacanze), who was in the break but dropped off the pace. Wow, the grass appears to be soft, but these men keep getting deceived by this corner.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the peloton gets to that corner.
We can expect to see lots of Pantani yellow today as the race rolls into Il Pirata territory - Marco Pantani was born in Cesenatico, near to the finish town of Cesena. Starting in San Marino, Pantani Tifosi are expected to be lining the roads, wearing yellow and silently applauding as the riders roll past.
Iannetti is now back at the race doctor's car, getting looked over. His right shoulder appears to be injured; he's holding it and wincing.
Cunego said this morning that Pantani was his idol, and he would like to dedicate another day in the pink jersey to him. Pantani's former gregario Marco Velo, now with Fassa Bortolo, said that there is a special sense in the race today, coming through Pantani territory - he says the important thing is to remember Il Pirata with respect.
35km left. Sella is 25" ahead of the four chasers, still led by Bertagnolli. It's all up and down on some nasty little climbs for Sella from here on out.
Ruben Lobato (Saunier Duval) has taken up the pace in the chase group, and now Fabien Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) has just rejoined this small chase group on a climb as they near the top. He's chasing the Green Jersey, and may get it by the end of the day.
The peloton is now 3' 30" behind, led by Saeco still.
30km left. Sella still on the attack. He's looking quite strong. The peloton is strung out on the descent, rolling through a switchback, and now another.
Sella still has 25" on the chasers. Back in the peloton, a Chocolade Jacques rider is getting a bike change. Geert Verheyen, it was. He's back underway going through the cars.
It looks like there were a few men who went off the road, including Verheyen, at the back of the peloton on this descent. That's why he needed the bike change.
Lobato leads the chase, with Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola) on his wheel. They are climbing, and appear to have dropped the other chasers for the moment.
25km left. Petacchi and his Fassa escorts have been dropped on one of the many climbs. Now Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval) is up with the chasers, who are now over 1' back. Simoni and Cunego are almost out of teammates in the peloton as they lead the chase.
This race has blown men all over the roads. Lots of men have been dropped from the peloton. Meanwhile, the chase group keeps changing, growing, shrinking, etc., as men fall away or attack from the peloton to join. Very exciting racing, but hard to keep track of.
Bertagnolli has now dropped from the chasers back to the peloton, where he now leads his men Simoni and Cunego on the front.
The peloton is about 2' 30" behind Sella. Check that, the peloton is 3' 40" behind Sella.
If Sella keeps this up, he could end the day in Pink. Wonder what kind of saddle Sella is riding? Hmmm...
16km left. The chase is back up to about a dozen men who are 1' 30" behind Sella. Then it's 3 minutes to the peloton. Sella is starting to look like a good bet for the win.
Wow, these little hills are steep, and the descents are hairy. Lots of switchbacks, decelerations, accelerations, and all on narrow roads. These roads that Sella is now attacking on look big enough just for one car at a time.
Sella is 22 years old, and was 7th in the Giro della Provincia di Lucca in February.
The peloton has to string out single file on this nasty descent. Sella is just absolutely charging up another steep little hill. This is a Cat 2 climb with about a 13% gradient. Mean hill, this.
Sella is increasing his lead. He now has 1' 40" on the chase group of a dozen or so men.
Zampieri is leading the chase up the climb in pursuit of Sella. Wow, Sella is on a very steep part of the climb, where he's having to grind his lowest gear on an 18% spike in the road.
He's now back in the saddle, Sella, and he is surrounded by a huge mass of tifosi. They are going bonkers for this man.
Boy, Sella is still on the climb! This is a nasty, nasty bugger of a climb. In the peloton, Simoni and Cunego are out of helpers, and have to lead the chase on their own. Popovych is up alongside Simoni at the front of the pack. What a day of racing this is!
15km left. Finally, thankfully, Sella crests the top of that very steep Cat 2 climb.
Oscar Mason and his teammate Zampieri are up the road near the front of this chase group, which rolls though at 1' 11" behind Sella. Interesting that those Vini Caldirola men are up the road. That helps Garzelli tactically.
Now McGee (FDJeux.com) attacks on the climb! Simoni has to respond. This has blown what remains of the peloton to pieces! Mad Bradley, what a race he's having! This is a nasty, steep climb, and McGee is on the attack.
11km left. Garate (Lampre) has now attacked the peloton. Simoni is leading the peloton setting the pace, with McGee sitting right on his wheel. Popovych is there too.
The chase group is down to six men at around 1' 15" behind Sella. Garzelli is with the leaders in the peloton, but he has two teammates up the road in this chase group.
9km left. Sella is flying along, the bit in his teeth, trying to make his long attack stick. He has over 1' on the increasingly desperate chasers.
7km left. Sella has over 1' 30" now. It appears that he will win the day. Will it be enough to take Pink? Moreni (Alessio) has bridged up to the chase group. Garate has also increased his gap on the peloton. If he can hold this, he'll move up the GC quite a bit.
The Saeco-led peloton has regrouped a bit, and Simoni and Cunego have a couple of helpers back on the front setting the pace. Garate has now almost made it across to the chasers. The peloton is about 2' behind Sella, and about 30" behind the chase.
4km left. Sella is on the final little climb of the day. He still looks strong, his shoulders rocking a bit on this mean little uncategorized bump in the road. Garate is driving the chase behind, trying to improve his position on GC.
Damn, this is a nasty climb poor Sella is driving it up. Behind, Moreni is now putting the screws on the chase. In the peloton, Cunego is setting the pace up this climb with McGee on his wheel.
Sella is 1' 10" ahead of the chasers still. The Pink Jersey group is now closing on the chasers. Boy, this climb! Sella is now on cobblestones and the grade is even steeper! Finally, blissfully, he gets over the top. So the chase is about 1' behind, and the peloton now is about 2' behind. Garzelli has now been dropped from the Pink Jersey group.
Final kilometer. Sella is flying down the road! He is in the barriers now, and this first-year professional is on his way to the biggest win of his life. He's pumping his fist to the team car. The Italian fans along the side of the road are roaring! A new Italian cycling hero is born, as Sella crosses the line to win the stage!
Now the chase comes across only 31" behind. Garate was in that group. Moreni wins the sprint for 2nd. The peloton closed at the end to finish only 40" behind Sella. So Garate and Moreni snaked about 10" from their GC rivals.
But the day belongs, clearly, to Emanuele "Seat of his Pants" Sella of Ceramiche Panaria - Margres. He went off into the bushes on a descent, but he kept his cool, kept his nerve, and seized the day. The team is ecstatic, bear hugs for their hero.
Sella is spraying the champagne after getting his kisses from the models on the podium. His grin is non-stop. Wonder which will hurt worse on Sella tomorrow, his legs, or his face, from grinning...
So the peloton came across 49" behind Sella.
Cunego now takes the podium. He's still in Pink, 10" ahead of his mate Simoni, though defending that jersey wasn't easy today.

Please join us again tomorrow for a flat out drag race from Cesena to Treviso (home to the Fassa Bortolo company) - we certainly know what is "supposed" to happen tomorrow, so let's see what does!
