87th Giro d'Italia Prologue

Good day and welcome to the Giro d'Italia. Today's 6.9 km time trial takes place in the Genoa city center. We will be providing the latest provisional results here, as we receive them.

The final startlist as well as the time trial start times can be found here.

16:30 CET: Gerolsteiner's Forster and Lampre's Righi have put in good times that place them second and third with 34 riders home. Lancaster still has the best time.

16:37 CET: Estonian old warrior Aug and oz young gun Lancaster were leading the charts for a while, but their time was blown away by Italian rider Dario Cioni, who improved their time with a good 7 seconds. It seems like he used the form he gained at Romandie to set the aiming time for the favorites of today.

With only 42 riders finished there is a long way to go and these standings will undoubtedly change, but also nice to see American Fast Freddy Rodriguez of Acqua & Sapone with a good early time.

Jacky Durand of LBK is sitting in 21st with a time of 9:24; Brit Charley Wegelius is just ahead of him in 18th, coming in at 9:21.

It's unlikely that they will beat the likes of Petacchi, Cipo, Svorada and McEwen, but a few 2nd or 3rd places could get them a long way if those sprint gods fail to deliver a good prologue. Tomas Vaitkus is also a fast man, by the way! He has posted a time that puts him in second.

16:46 CET: Ljungqvist has also put in a very decent time.

Fifty men home, and Alberto Loddo of Saunier Duval has been holding lantern rouge so far today, now in 50th place with his time of 10:07.

Riders who do not have any ambitions of winning the GC of the Giro d'Italia but dream about riding around in the Maglia Rosa for a long time would do well to give this prologue their best. Already in the third stage there's a tough climb (Corno alle Scale, 1.462m, 12 kms of climbing), so it's possible that the sprinters can forget about wearing the jersey for a while.

Garzelli teammate Mauro Gerosa has put in a good time that places him in the provisional top ten - at 9th spot with 9:13.

16:54 CET: Now two Fassas are sitting in the top spots - Bruseghin and Cioni. The nine minute mark will surely be cracked soon, but it looks like the Fassa Boys are reaching out for the team ranking.

17:05 CET: Sixty-nine riders home and no change to the top ten.

There are some 4-5 superb sprinters in this year's Giro, with Alessandro Petacchi being the red-hot favorite of course, after last year's performance. His season hasn't been as dominating so far as it was last year, but he did win just about all the sprints he contested this year. One of the only exceptions was not so long ago in Romandie where he was outsprinted by Czech Jan Svorada, but it must be said that his team lead-out had been disturbed by a crash earlier there.

The man who goes by the name he-with-the-shiny-teeth-but-not-so-shiny-as-Boogerd among tribesmen, everybody's favorite Mario Cipollini, is not a 100% for this Giro, but should still be able to make his mark and pinch a stage or two. In an interview he said that his main focus this year is on the Tour de France, he wants to ride it out this year, instead of giving up when the road goes up.

Also, he already has taken the Giro stage win from Binda, so he's not "obliged" to do well anymore. But he will do okay methinks; the Giro has always been "his" race. It's no wonder that a BIG part of all the wins in his career are Giro stages, up to almost a quarter or a third.

But it is presumable that the mean man from Down Under, Robbie McEwen, will be the big contender for Petacchi this year. He's become a little bit stronger, and is feeling very confident. He says that in all of April, he only got beaten once in the sprint, "by Tom Boonen's elbow in the Scheldeprijs".

Love him or hate him, you can't say he lacks in self-confidence! He won 2 stages in the Giros of 2002 and 2003, and is looking to continue that streak. He did announce that he'll abandon once in the third week of the Giro, because he doesn't want to lose any unnecessary form for the Tour, so he won't be a concurrent for Petacchi, who is planning on riding out the Giro, for the points jersey.

The 9 minute mark has been soundly broken by Gerolsteiner's Olaf Pollack, with a time of 8:40.

The start order of the final twelve riders is as follows:

158 MC GEE Bradley
159 PELLIZOTTI Franco
160  MOOS Alexandre
161 DOMINGUEZ J. Carlos
162 DI GRANDE Giuseppe
163 ARDILA CANO Mauricio
164 POPOVYCH Yaroslav
165 REBELLIN Davide
166 ASTARLOA Igor
167 GARZELLI Stefano
168 PEREZ ARANGO Marlon
169 SIMONI Gilberto

Jan Svorada is always a bit of a mystery, he certainly has the innate ability to win mass sprints, but it doesn't show too often. He's beaten just about any other sprinter somewhere along the line, but never stayed consistent, and the aging process ain't helping either of course. However, he's in good shape and has a strong team lined up with the likes of Hauptmann and Pagliarini around him; and has the confidence of beating Petacchi not too long ago, as I mentioned earlier. We'll see!

Last in line of the "big" names is Ivan Quaranta, the Cheetah! As with Svorada, he CAN win mass sprints, but he does need a course that's as flat as a pancake, which isn't really common in this year's Giro; it's not for nothing that this is claimed to be a climber's Giro! Fingers crossed for another flare of Quaranta's innate speed!

17:47 CET: One hundred ten riders of the 169 are now in. Pollack took a big bite out of Bruseghin's first spot - how many more of these last riders will jump over the Fassa rider?

The final dozen riders are set to depart beginning in the next forty minutes or so.

German TT-specialist Olaf Pollack has positively pulverized Brughesin's time, wow! The winner of the prologue won't do much better than him, if he doesn't win it himself, that is. Interesting to note are Moreni's and Pospeyev's times. Also, Fassa puts another rider in the top times with Massimo Codol!

McEwen put in a time of 9:12, which puts him in 17th spot so far for the prologue. Cunego sits at 26th with a time of 9:15, while Gasparre shares the slowest time with Loddo and Serrina of Formaggi, of 10:07.

Yet ANOTHER Fassa rider with a good time, 4-time Italian TT-champ Marco Velo has entered the top 5 now, while Acqua & Sapone's Trampusch has taken second.

Now spring sensation Magnus Backstedt finishes - he is not below the 9 minute mark, but is in at 9:02, matching Velo's time and in provisional 5th spot. Backstedt is a fast man, as you know, but not super-fast, but compensates that with his strength and enormous engine, making him very suited for prologues.

Also interesting to note is Philippe Gilbert's good time. He's only 21 or 22, but he is, together with Brad McGee, FDJ.com's team leader for this Giro. A man to watch for the future!

One hundred twenty eight men home so far.

18:12 CET: Now another ten men have finished, 138 so far, and no one has yet touched Pollack's 8:54. McEwen did what he had to do; keep the damage in check, 27 seconds behind Pollack is a very good result. Mazzoleni and Tonkov also both lost some 30 seconds to Pollack. Svorada logged a time of 9:33, while Angelo Furlan rode the course in 9:27.

18:23 CET: The big guns are getting ready to start, while Benoit Vaugrenard has moved into the top ten. He is apparently a very young guy, only 22, one of Fdjeux's young guns. 146 riders home.

Popo takes provisional third spot - wow!!!

Cipollini will be lucky to keep in the top ten with both Popovych and Dominguez putting in such good times, and the other high-ticket boys still on the course, like Rebellin, Astarloa, Garzelli and Gibo.

In the Belgian news, Popovych mentioned that this year's Giro will be a lot harder for him than last year, because this time people will be watching him and there are big expectations! He doesn't expect to come in third again, but is hoping for a top-5 place and a stage win. Modesty or realistic thinking? Who knows!
