30th Volta ao Algarve - Stage 5 Updated

A group of eleven escaped early on in the 178.5km stage finishing on the Cat 2 climb of the short but steep Malhao, including Euskaltel Basques Inaki Inasi and Joseba Zubeldia, having both shown themselves well at the Etoiles des Besseges and grimpeurs Amorim (Milaneza) and Bru (LA Pecol). Indeed, for the Meta Volante with just 17.8km gone, Bru beat the two Orange Men for the time bonus although it hardly mattered in the overall classification.
With 120km left, the break began to splinter up the Category 3 as the mountain men motored. It was Milaneza's Amorim who crested the climb first, holding a few seconds lead over Pedro Martins of Barbot and Yon Bru respectively. However, although things re-grouped to a large extent, the break was separated for good over the Cat. 2 climb with 100km to go.

Goncalo Amorim and Yon Bru, the two noted climbers in the break, got away together and climbed away from the helpless others. Amorim won the sprint over the top of the climb (and with that took the mountains class). Then three more riders emerged from the clouds, over a minute in arrears, for a downhill dive: Carvalhelhos veteran sprinter and Portuguese champion Pedro Soeiro alongside Zubeldia and Martins. Behind them, a group of six riders formed the remnants of the break. And whilst, the second escaped group joined with the duo in front as the land flattened out, the other riders were caught by a US Postal-led peloton.

As the kilometres flew by, there were more retirements from riders realising they could do nothing more in this tour - George Hincapie, using this Tour as Classics preparation, was one of 34 riders who abandoned. US Postal had timed the chase well, and with 6.5km to go and the climb almost in view, the breakaway was caught. It was unquestionable that Postal had brought the best squad in the race to the Algarve for this race. Could they make their skills work to help Lance Armstrong to a surprise early victory? Or would they help another rider in the 'family' to win?

Inside the last 2km and with the peloton entering Steep City and fragmenting, Floyd Landis attacked and put the hurts on most of the riders in the peloton, as the gradient simultaneously went up. Dancing on the pedals, he forced a gap as groups of small riders chased. Behind, a quartet containg Victor Hugo Pena, two time overall winner Candido Barbosa (LA Pecol), Cofidis Classics man Peter Farazijn (surprisingly, as Farazijn got away on flatter land with the Quick Step stars in last year's Het Volk) and Carvalhelhos ace climber Ezequiel Mosquera had formed, and as the latter yo-yoed on and off the group, Landis increased his lead painstakingly. Behind, David Bernabeu and Bruno Castanheira chased together for Milaneza, but they had missed the boat.

With Pena sitting pretty, shirking chase responsibilites of a teammate, it was going to take a huge effort to bring back Landis, especially from a Classics man and sprinter (essentially, although an in-form Barbosa can fly up climbs). Indeed, an exhausted Landis crossed the line ahead to take the stage, and with that the overall title, whilst last year's winner Pena finished at the back of the three-man chase group finishing five seconds behind Landis, to take second overall. Thomas Dekker, the youthful Rabobank Dutchman, also took top ten on the stage whilst Jose Azevedo and Stuart O'Grady were both in the top fifteen.

But what of Lance Armstrong, in the leader's jersey? Seemingly he relaxed (not a particularly Lance-like trait) on the climb and let the domestiques [Noval and Barry] do the work for him - as long as a teammate won overall, he'd be happy. Also, I'm sure he'd rather sacrifice victory here than in the Tour de France next July. Indeed, Armstrong came home 34th at 1'02" which was still good enough for fifth overall and some handy UCI points, without fully extending himself.

Again, it must be noted the Tour of Algarve didn't have world-class opposition for Armstrong and Co. to dig their claws into. Nonetheless, in the past five days we have seen US Postal, fresh from their training camp, tear the opposition apart - two stage wins, three riders in the top five overall (nearly four, unlucky for Barry) and the teams classification.

Meanwhile, this is Landis' pro win since the Tour of Poitou-Charentes in 2001, and arguably his best to date, although his 2002 Dauphine second overall, which announced him to the world of cycling as a possible force, might be remembered more. Sandwiched between the US Postals who took first, second and fifth were Candido Barbosa and Thomas Dekker - both have been excellent this week, especially the Rabobank Espoirs, with two riders in the top seven. Cofidis' Classic riders - O'Grady, Engoulvent [eigth overall] and Farazijn - were also impressive throughout. However, they have been powerless against the domination of US Postal: if this is a training exercise, I'd like to see how they do in the 'real thing' this July.
