Quaranta smooths to win in Langkawi

At last! The sprinters' big day finally arrived in the Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi when a big bunch containing 107 of the day's 128 starters swept into Johor Bahru together after a fast and furious 175.20 km.108.95 km stage from Muar. It was the super-fast 29 year old Italian star Ivan Quaranta, riding on the team sponsored by cheesemakers Formaggi Pinzolo, who burst out of the pack to beat Brazil's Luciano Pagliarini, Lampre - a triple stage winner in the event last year - to the line in convincing style. This was the first European stage win in the Malaysian race since stage eight back in 2002. Fittingly, it came from a man who himself won three Le Tour de Langkawi stages, back in 2000 - and who has a record of more than 30 victories since turning pro back in 1996.

Argentina's Ruben Bongiorno,Ceramiche Panaria-Magres, like Pagliarini a stage winner last year, took third place, with overall points' race leader Gordon Fraser, of Canada and riding on the American-based Health Net Pro team, in fourth place and Irish revelation Eugene Moriarty fifth. With two men in the first three on the stage and two others - the Colombian Colombia-Selle Italia team-mates Marlon Perez and Freddy Gonzalez - retaining their first and third places overall, it was a benefit day for the South Americans. With all the main contenders finishing together there were no changes in the overall individual and team classifications nor in the points competition, except that with his fourth place on the stage Gordon Fraser widened his leading margin to a comfortable 21 points over his nearest challenger. That is more than enough to ensure that the Canadian will retain the blue points race jersey all the way to the tour finish in Kuala Lumpur.

Fraser had been hoping for even more of a field day and a stage win had seemed a strong possibility for him, given his flying form. It didn't work out that way though: "The guys on our team had a pretty tough day of it," he commented at the finish, "Two of them had been in the early break which cleaned up the on-the-road sprint points and stopped my rivals from eating into my lead. They were pretty much spent after that, so I ended up on my own in the build-up to the final sprint. "My lead-out man, Greg Henderson, got a plastic bag tangled in his wheel with 10 km to go. I tried to reach down and pull it out for him but I wasn't brave enough to risk losing my fingers and had to leave him to it. "Eric Wohlberg, Roland Green and Charles Dionne of our Canadian national team got their train going and I tucked in behind them but they then ran out of gas with about 400 yards to go. I made a mistake and hesitated - and you can't afford to make errors when you are up against such fast finishers as Quaranta and Pagliarini." For Quaranta's part, everything went perfectly: "It was a hard race today, very fast, but it worked out perfectly for me. I managed to get onto Gordon Fraser's wheel in the sprint and came round him at the right moment.

I'd hoped that would be so and that I'd have been able to grab a couple of firsts by now and maybe have been able to spend a couple of days in the race leader's yellow jersey. "I always seem to go well early in the season and I am hoping I can hold this kind of form through to the Tour of Italy, in May, as I did in 2000 when my three stage wins in Malaysia were followed by two in the Giro. "My only disappointment is that the race didn't start off with flat stages, as it did last year." Despite the big bunch finish, it had been a far from uneventful day, with a 47.93 kph.29.80 mph average speed and lots of action. Strong cross and tailwinds added to a blazing sun to make it a race where everyone had to grit their teeth to close down gaps in the bunch and counter breakaway moves. The first attack, from America's Michael Sayers, Health Net Pro, and Ireland's David O'Loughlin, came right from the start and the action was on. A big crash at 24 km saw more than a dozen hit the deck, the worst affected being America's Brice Jones, Health Net Pro, who soldiered on to courageously finish the stage but needed five stitches in his elbow and had bruising to his tailbone making him a possible non-starter tomorrow. Definite non-starters will be Fuyu Li of China and Hamad Mohd Mahazir, both disqualified for taking illicit pace from a team vehicle. Malaysian national team manager Amrun Misnoh has also been banished from the race, for alleged complicity in the offence.

Four kilometres down the road, 15 riders had a 13 seconds lead over the main bunch, with South African national team member Daryl Impey winning the first Petronas sprint. With the lead hovering at around half-a-minute, 49 km were covered in the first hour of racing and the gap extended to a maximum 2 min 35 sec over the next hour of racing, with another 45 km passing under the fast spinning wheels. Impey went for the second Petronas sprint too but was just beaten to the line by Team Barloworld's Jock Green, South Africa. Soon after the third and final Petronas Sprint, with Impey third this time and the honours going to Michael Sayers, the break started to split up and the lead came tumbling down, with the last survivors of the break giving up at the 30 km to go mark. With 20 km left, a group of three were clutching a narrow 12 seconds advantage as the sprinters and their lead-out men began to mass at the head of the bunch. It was a brave effort from Japanese national champion Shinichi Fukushima, Alexander Lavallee, of Canada, and Philip Diegnan, of Ireland, but doomed to failure and with just five kilometres left the bunch was all back together again and the sprinters' big moment had arrived.
