Track Cycling - Six Days of Nouméa : Night 4

One night of racing to go in Nouméa, and the battle is still wide open. Despite not winning any of Tuesday’s events, local favorites Jean Michel Tessier and Robert Sassone, going for a fourth victory in the new Caledonian contest, kept the overall leadership also after the penultimate session, as they are 4 points clear of Germany’s Stefan “Steini” Steinweg and Eric Weispfenning.

A success on home soil might help Sassone, the only rider from New Caledonia so far able to race a Grand Tour, find a new contract, something he’s looking for since his contract with Cofidis, the team whose jersey he has been wearing for the last four years, has not been renewed. The man is reportedly in talks with a team that could sign him - btw.

Julien Tejada and Benoît Genauzeau follow, while the French pair of Franck Perque and Fabien Merciris are fourth in the GC. Worthy of praise are also the performances of Yaroslav Popovych and Volodymyr Bileka: even though they are not track specialists, the Ukrainians are currently sitting in spot number five. Not a bad result at all for the young boys of Landbouwkrediet-Colnago.

As for “Steini” and Weispfenning, the German duo won a spectacular, hard fought 140-lap Madison in the last part of the session, edging out Tessier and Sassone by three points after, earlier in the race, the first chase of the night had gone to a local pairing, Jerry Bousquet and Wilfried Loquet of the AS Police-Nouméa squad.

Richard Berton and Jonathan Dangio were the winners of Tuesday night session in the “Mini Six Jours”, but nevertheless New Caledonia’s very own Tuanua and Tevitu Zahn easily maintained their overall lead in the “Young Guns” race.

While Laurent Gané, his cousin Hervé and Florian Rousseau keep showing off their skills in the Sprinter’s competition, Tuesday night was also the night of David Burguière, who claimed victory and set a new record in the contest reserved for handicapped persons. The crowd and all other Nouméa Six participants paid an emotional tribute to Burguière, who was victim of terrible road accident when a car out of control run over a group of cyclists, an accident that once again poses the route security problem.

The Night 3 report has been updated with full Standings for both the Six Days and the "Mini Six Jours" events. See link down in this page.
