| Six Days of Nouméa-Province Sud-Opt: Night Three (Dec. 01, 2003)
After the two first sessions at Nessadiou, and Sunday’s “rest day”, the “Six Days de la Province Sud” track cycling event moved to the Velodrome of New Caledonia’s main city Nouméa, where it resumed on Monday evening with the third leg of this contest.
And with good news for 29-year-old Florian Rousseau who, after an impressive string of second and third place finishes, finally managed to score a victory, as he edged out Nouméa’s very own Laurent Gané in the “Vitesse” competition. Britain’s Craig Mc Lean filled the remaining podium spot ahead of Laurent’s cousin Hervé Gané.
But crowd favorite Laurent Gané, recent winner of the "Vélo d'Or" prize awarded by French journalists (the Nouméa-born track specialist got this honour for the second time as he received 86 votes, 19 more than Richard Virenque, 46 more than TdF Final Stage winner Jean-Patrick Nazon 40) took revenge soon later. Gané won the Keirin (which he's also World Champion of - btw) event, ahead of Australian Jason Niblett, who put on a surprising performance and improved on the third place he got at Nessadiou on Saturday, while Rousseau was back to old habits as he snatched third in Nouméa.
As to the main race, Germany’s Eric Weispfennig and Stefan Steinweg won the first Madison of the night, but lost the overall lead to local favorites Jean-Michel Tessier (winners of the last two editions of the Nouméa Six, and aiming for a possible hat-trick) and Robert Sassone, after the Neo Caledonian pairing dominated the second chase ahead of local rider Thierry Fondère and his Swiss teammate David Gisiger.
Nothing changed at the top of the “Mini 6 Jours”, with the Zahn brothers (Tuana and Tevitu) still in the lead, even though winners of Monday’s session were last year’s runners-up Kévin Maitere and François Tejada.
