Track Cycling: Six Days of the Flanders - Night 2

Six Days of the Flanders - Night Two (Nov. 19, 2003)

Holland's Robert Slippens and Danny Stam are no doubt a force to be reckoned with. After claiming victory on home soil at the Amsterdam Six, they might have the chance to do it again in nearby Belgium, as the Dutch pairing took over the top spot in the overall classification after Night Two of the "Six Days of Flanders", currently taking place in the town of Ghent (Gent in Flemish, Gand in French).

Winners of the 500-meter Time Trial (where American Nothstein and British teammate Robert Hayles were runners-up for the second straight night) on Wednesday night, Slippens and Stam achieved the 100-point mark and the consequent bonus lap. Such that they managed to take a lap out of most of their rivals, and keep Germany's Kappes and Beikirch from taking the lead: the Munich and Dortmund podium finishers are doing fine, but their score is still too low, such that they retained second place.

Besides Slippens and Stam, Wednesday's real winners were Switzerland's Franco Marvulli and Alexander Aeschabch, who took the Points Race, Individual Elimination Race and notably the second and last Madison of the night, when they put one lap into many other competitors. Add the bonus lap they earned after hitting the 100-point mark (the guys are the top scorers in the race), and you may realize how they could move up six (!) places into third.

Slippens and Stam displaced overnight leaders Scott McGrory and Robert Sassone who, in spite of winning the "Midnight Sprint" contest, slipped four spots down to number five, and are currently one lap down to the new leading pair, and also trailing 13 points behind McGrory's "usual" partner Matt Gilmore and Britain's Wiggins. Matt and Brad won the first Madison of the night instead, plus the Team Elimination and, once again, the Derny (on Tuesday with reigning European Champion Wiggins, twenty-four hours later with his Aussie-Belgian team-mate).

Bruno Risi and Kurt Betschart added 37 further points to their tally, after the former won a Derny heat, but couldn't improve their position in the Overall Standings. It will be very difficult for the “Alpen Express” to repeat the victory they got twelve months ago. Jimmi Madsen and Germany's 33-year-old Lars Teutenberg (brother of Team Bianchi's sprinter Sven) are the worst scorers, but when it comes to the number of laps lost they are in a better position than many other pairs, so it's no surprise at all that they are seventh in the GC.

American Marty Nothstein and British partner Robert Hayles, whose best result was the above mentioned second place finish in the Team Time Trial (but Nothstein is used to win that kind of races) followed in the footsteps of Sassone and McGrory, by dropping four places overall (and also lost several laps). Iljo Keisse and Franz Stocher moved down a few places, whereas Keisse’s compatriot and “fellow youngster” Dimitri De Fauw maintained the “Lanterne Rouge” spot.

Keisse and De Fauw’s “main victims” in the first three legs of the Under 23 “UIV Cup” Trophy, namely Denmark’s Michael Larsen and Michael Berling, retained the lead in the “Six Days of the Future” (Round 4 of the same Series), and a one-lap margin over Switzerland’s Ralph Zimmerman and Olivier Mattmann as well as another Belgian pair (Johan Van Den Abeele and Kenny De Ketele), both teams tied at 39 points. Four more local guys follow on the same number of laps.

Following the race tradition. Thursday’s third session is divided in two different parts: a first one, going under the name of GO PASS Jongerennamiddag, to run in the afternoon, with young spectators benefiting from the reduced price of the ticket. And the second taking place in the evening/night as usual. Expect many teams to hit the 100-point mark and gain a bonus lap that could change a lot in the GC. Thursday’s detailed Schedule is available below in the page.
