Cyclo-Cross: UCI World Cup Round 2 Updated

Winner of the opening leg in Turin three weeks before, recidive Belgian Sven Nijs has won also the second Round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup, held on Sunday in the German town of Sankt Wendel (home to the World Championships of this same discipline in 2005). The Rabobank superstar edged out Czech Jiri Pospisil.

While Nijs repeated victory, fellow Belgian Ben Berden repeated the third place finish he got in Turin, whereas a crash forced red hot favourite Bart Wellens, runner-up in the World Cup opener, out of the race.

Needless to say, the 27-year-old from Bonheiden strengthened his lead in the UCI World CUP General Classification. American Jonathan Page was the best placed English-Speaker in the Men's race, although actually he didn't get higher than 16th. Britain's David Collins and Ian Wilkinson finished outside the Top 40 spots.

Cats and dogs and more livestock, and some cyclocrossers who trustred themselves outdoors in Sankt Wendel, Germany. It was slippery wet. The pace though was set high, the intermediate of the whole race was 30 km/Ph. Newly European champion U23 Martin Zlamalik from Czechia proved with Pospisil that his country sure has some perspective to beat Belgium in future, they finished with 4 riders amongst the 11th best. Wellens afterwards told he had to quit the race due to the cold.

American Allison Dunlap managed to an excellent second place finish in the Ladies' contest, won by German sensation Hanka Kupfernagel. Sunday's podium was completed by French rider Marine Salvetat, while another English-speaker made her way into the Top 5 places: Britain's Victoria Wilkinson snatched fifth. Just like Wellens in the men's race, red hot favourite Daphny van den Brand was a DNF today. The 29-year-old winner from Berlin also moved to the top of the World Cup Overall Standings.
