40th Six Days of Munich - Night Three (November 08, 2003)

Bruno Risi and Kurt Beschart regained the top spot as the contest reached its halfway point. The “Alpen Express”, going for a sixth win in this event, is now leading Matt Gilmore and Scott McGrory by a six-point margin. That’s not a huge gap anyway, and the battle goes on, with one more team in the spotlight too: Holland’s Slippens and Stam are just 10 points behind the top placed pair, and four down to the Australian-Belgian runners-up. All three leading couples are close to hit the 200-point mark and get another bonus lap.

Germany’s Kappes and Beikirch got their own bonus lap as they moved well over the 100-point score, but nevertheless remain one lap down to the podium teams. Also Wiggins and Sassone gained one bonus lap, and that’s good news as they are on the same number of laps as the “Two Andreas” now. Robert Bartko and Marty Nothstein have an excellent score, and moved up one place into eighth overall on Saturday. Bad news for Aeschbach and van Zijl instead: while Marvulli is doing fine at the “Olympiahalle”, the other Grenoble Six winner and his South-African teammate got back to the “Lanterne Rouge” place.

As for the Under 23 competition (“Franziskaner Rad Open”), winners of Saturday’s session were Alexei Chmidt and Konstantin Ponomarov of Russia, who partially made up for Friday’s disappointing performance and moved up one place into fifth overall. But it was a good day also for Iljo Keisse and Dimitri De Fauw: the Belgians took second behind the two East-Europeans, and strengthened their grip on the overall lead, now ahead of Germany’s Piper and Welsch, third place finishers on Saturday and moving up two places in the GC. Zimmermann and Mattmann snatched seventh only in the night session, and fell to place #4, while Leif Lampater and Sven Kraus maintained their podium spot.
