Cyclo-Cross: UCI World Cup Round 1 (Turin, Italy)

The first round of the UCI World Cup, that took place on Sunday in the Italian city of Turin, was won by Belgian Sven Nijs (Rabobank) ahead of fellow countryman Bart Wellens. Nijs took revenge on Wellens after he lost to the Spaar Select rider in last week's Super Prestige Trophy opener at Ruddervoorde, Holland (see link at the bottom of the page). Ben Berden completed the all-Belgian podium, while the best-placed non-Belgian was - as it occurred many a time in the past - Nijs' Dutch teammate Richard Groenendaal.

The top Italian finisher, Espoir World Champion Enrico Franzoi, took eighth, while Britain's Matt Ellis snatched 23rd place and American Jonathan Page was 26th.

The Italian contest ended up in a hotly-contested sprint, with the Rabobank team leader sprinting to victory by the slimmest of margins. Only a few millimetres - and the photofinish - decided the outcome of the race, and awarded 27-year-old Nijs the World Cup lead after the first Round. The Women Race was won by Holland's Nicole Van den Brand.

The next leg of the Cyclo-cross World Cup is set to take place Sunday, November 16 2003, in the German town of Sankt Wendel.
