Choosing the winner of the Vuelta Writing Contest was like riding up the Alpe
d'Huez with an anvil strapped to your back. This was a very tough contest
- we had a great number of entrants, the entries of high quality. In fact,
the entries are so good that the two judges (podofdonny in Europe and Janna in
the US) decided they wanted to present the honorable mentions before announcing
the contest winner, who will receive the Cofidis jersey signed by the entire
Cofidis Vuelta team pictured above.
So we will be publishing the honorable mentions daily over the next few days,
and there will be a complete list in the "Just In" slot at the top of our
homepage as we go along. If you are an entrant, we hope the suspense has not
already gotten to you too much, but we would very much like to highlight all the
great work submitted. We hope you will enjoy these as much as we did - you are a
very talented bunch!
Honorable Mentions - Group One
Graham Jones -
The Tour and its times.
A broad and yet personal view of the world's greatest cycling race.
"Like all occupying forces, the Germans tried to restore a semblance of
normal life to occupied France. Try as they may, they could not induce the
Tour organizers to put on the TdF."
Michael Roy - From
"Cyclist" to Weekend Rider and Bike-Commuter
How one man came to look at the bike in a different way...
"...I started with short rides, rides so short I never would have
bothered to do them when I was a 'cyclist.'"
Dave Shields -
The Race - Prologue
Dave's entry is the prologue of his new novel - we wish him the best
(and look for it in bookstores...)
"His body sliced through the air like a wing. He felt lift,
a diminished sense of the road. The bike seemed to discover a new gear as
the orange dashed line on the pavement strobed by."
