FANTASY SPRING - AND THE WINNER IS ...

1st FABIO'S FANTASY SPRING: VIRTUAL TEAMS - FINAL CLASSIFICATION

Denmark's David Holm became the Overall Champion of the 1st Fabio's fantasy Spring", after keeping a 4-points margin on his main rival, Holland's Remo Kaasenbrood, at the end of the last leg of the competition.

Mr. Holm's "Giorgino" Team scored 61 points in Fantasy Amstel Gold Race, thanks to Zabel (15) Bettini (18) Van Petegem (24) Astarloa (3) and Mapei (1); that was enough for him to keep the lead, while Kaasenbrood's "San Remo" virtual squad got 91 points (Boogerd 38 - Bettini 18 - Van Petegem 24 - Verheyen 5 - Rabobank 6), four less of what he needed to win.

The best-ranked American player was AGR's runner-up David Rose, whose "Rosie's riders" gave him 142 points, enough to earn him a podium spot, at the expense of Turkey's Rabun Koasr, who dropped to fourth overall, while Puertorican Josué Nazario moved up to an execellent fifth spot.

Fantasy Amstel Gold Race Champion Chad Gagnier moved up to 11th place, missing the TOP 10 by only 2 points, while Denmark's good performance in the game was completed by Peter Lind's 15th spot overall. Joe Coughlin, winner of the previous Fabio's Fantasy Game ("Fantasy Worlds") got an honourable 16th place, but such a Fantasy Game veteran as mr. Holm (who, if I'm not mistaken, also won a TdF-related contest and a Vuelta-linked one in 2001) proved unbeatable.

So here is the Final Overall Classification of the 1st Fabio's Fantasy Spring:

Erick Nordsieck from the U.S. perfectly lived up to his team's name and thanks to 100 points he got from Bartoli (60) Boogerd (38), Mazzoleni (81) and Mapei (1) actually became the "Best of the Rest", with 313 points gained in 4 different competitions (all but Milan-San Remo).

Second was the great Daily Peloton Writer "Podofdonny" from Yorkshire, who earned 112 points in "Fantasy Amstel Gold Race", while the third spot in this special competition went to Rachel "largest Team Names in the World" Ward from the U.S. Former "leader" Alex Ball from the U.K.stayed into the TOP 10 places depsite setting a new, not that pleasant record: he wasn't able to get any single points in the last 2 races. But his performaces in RVV and PR were enough to guarantee him a TOP 10 place. Another Briton, Gus Windsock, nmade a great debut in Amstel Gold Race, with 116 points. Just two teams, who played in LBL only, didn't pick up any points.

Belgium's JOHAN MUSEEUW (Domo-Farm Frites) was the "Fantasy Spring" TOP RIDER, as he got 103 points, ahead of the most regular cyclist, Peter van Petegem, who picked up 84 points in 4 different legs of the game. Paolo Bettini (78 points in LBL and AGR) was third, three points ahead of Milan-San Remo (Lion) King Mario Cipollini, while another master of regularity, Jo Planckaert, got 65 points. 57 points for George Hincapie, one more than World Champion Oscar Freire.

As for TRADE TEAMS, as predictable MAPEI, DOMO and FASSA once again showed that when the Spring Classics come, they are THE TEAMS: The Mapeis picked up 53 points in 4 races out of 5, while Domo-Farm Frites had an excellent score too: 40 points, 4 more than Ferretti's "white and blue army".

THE "FANTASY AMSTEL GOLD RACE" - Final leg of "Fabio's fantasy Spring", was won by American Chad Gagnier ahead of fellow countrymen David Rose (who came second only due to the tie-breaking rules) and Terence Sexton. Full results and details of the stage available in the link at the bottom of the page.

Well folks, another Fantasy Game (the fourth one, after Tour, Vuelta and World Championships) is over. The "Fantasy Spring" got a record number of participants (182 different players, scaterreed all around its 5 different races) from several countries in 4 continents, and got a well-deserved Danish winner, with great performances by other European contenders, and 3 stage victories for the USA. Even Asia had its slice of the cake thanks to Andre Umali, MSR winner and overall leader for two legs.

Hope you all had fun and may be back in the next Fabio's Fantasy Game: the 1st "Fabio's Fantasy Giro", to start in a couple of weeks ...

... assuming we may organize it !!! Indeed, there are some "technical diffs" (in other words ... lack of time), that could make it difficult for me to run the game. But as we noticed how funny - and even quite popular - these Fantasy Games are, I promise we'll do our best in order to set up a new contest for the first Grand Tour of the year. In the coming "Supreme Council" of this site's crew, we'll try to find a solution. Maybe the next game could be organized and run by the whole DP staff, with many giving their contribute. Just be patient and we'll probably let you know something more in the near future.

In the meantime - stay tuned to the DAILY PELOTON for all the latest from the wonderful world of pro (and not only pro) cycling.
