TRENTINO: Fassa's Marco Zanotti wins Stage 1

Evidently unhappy at Mapei's 1-2 at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Fassa Bortolo boys decided to reply to their archrivals the same way as soon as possible. Indeed they didn't miss their first chance, as on Thursday afternoon they won stage 1 of Giro del Trentino (Arco-Arco, 166 km.) by heir own great 1-2, courtesy of 28-year-old Marco Zanotti (former Liquigas), who won ahead of teammate Denis Zanette. Third place getter was Alexandre Usov (Belarus - Phonak Hearing Systems).

The stage, encompassing three ascents (with the Bondo climb to be tackled twice), was featured by several breakaways, the last of which, made up of Italy's Sergio Barbero (Lampre-Daikin) and Gianluca Tonetti (Cage Maglierie-Olmo), was brought back with just 500 metres to go. Rodlfo Massi (Ita - Amore & Vita-Beretta) and John Ibbotson (GBR - RDM-Flanders) did not take the start.

The leg was off to a flying start, with the first breakaway coming just after 700 metres into racing, thanks to Mirko Marini, Michele Gobbi, and Poland's Przemjslav Niemec of the Amore & Vita-Beretta Team. Four kilometres later the trio was joined by Alessandro Brendolin, Jaroslaw Rebiewski (Poland), Rinaldo Nocentini, Raffaele Illiano and no less than the DP's good friend Gordon Mc Cauley (New Zealand-RDM Flanders). But Bby km. 8 the peloton had regrouped again.

Other break attempts followed, but only an all-Italian quartet made up of Oscar Pozzi, Denis Bertolini, Domenico Gualdi and Frattini actually managed to escape. Two of them were reeled in soon though, while local riders Bertolini (Phonak) and Gualdi (Mobilvetta) stayed clear a little longer, enough to let the former win the Intermediate Sprint in Tione and capture the leadership of the relative ranking.

After 64km. of racing, the Bondo KOM Prime was won by Selle Italia's Baliani, ahead of Palumbo and teammate Fredy "Speedy" Gonzalez. Some 20 km. later another break group went clear, this time containing the likes of Russia' Konyshev, Mapei's Aggiano, Alessandro Bertolini (Alessio), Mariano Piccoli, neopro Damiano Cunego, Alessandro Brendolin (Mobilvetta), Michele Gobbi and Portugal's Acacio Quintin da Silva (CCC-Polsat Television). The eight escapers were joined at the Km. 100 mark by Acqua e Sapone's Masciarelli and Cage's Colombian Buenahora (recently winner in an Italian race): the chasing peloton was 50” down, and the gap went up to a maximum of 1’15”, before the main bunch swallowed them by km. 123.

With 29 km. to the finish line came the above mentioned attack by Barbero and Tonetti. The Italian pair gained up to 1'19" over the peloton, but you already know the way it all ended for them ...

So it all came down to a final sprint (including a crash of Picoli, Alessio's Furlan and Mapei's veteran Bramati). And also thanks to the perfect leadout work by Fassa's "white-and-blue train", Zanotti took his first win in 2002, the fifth in his career so far, and put an end to a bad period marked by a right knee tendinitis.

He said afterwards "I During this season I had raced at Tour of the Mediterranean and Setmana Catalana only. I was back in "Settimana Lombarda", where I got a second and a third place. Today's stage was the only one somehow suitable to sprinters, but it has been difficult for me to win, as my form was still affected by the one month-stop due to tendinitis. And besides that, the climbs were not that easy for a sprinter; everything has gone well anyway. As for the coming stages, my task will be helping teammates, definitely not trying to retain the leader's fuchsia jersey".
