Here comes the Vuelta! GT Triples and Grand Slams

Grand Tour Triples

Alessandro Petacchi will soon know whether he will become the third cyclist in history who triples - to win stages the same year in the three Grand Tours, the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana.  There are only two men in history to have done this so far -  Miguel Poblet and Pierino Baffi.

Petacchi has just won two stages in the Tour of Holland, so in a few short weeks we will see...

And This Year?

2001 was the last year a rider finished all three tours (Jon Odriozola Mugarza of Banesto). Here are the eleven finishers of the 2003 Giro and the 2003 Tour, with their finish ranking for each tour. They are arranged as above - in order by the best combined ranking of each rider (the lower the total score, the higher the ranking). Though it still remains to be seen, looking at the provisional Vuelta start list below, not a one of these riders will take the start in the Vuelta.
