28th Subida a Urkiola 1.3
It has been a good weekend for Italians in Basque Country - taking the top
five spots in yesterday's Clasica San Sebastion, and today iBanesto's Leonardo
Piepoli won the Ascent of Urkiola (Subida a Urkiola). This is Piepoli's third
win in this race - he also won in 1995 and 1999. This also matches the all-time
record for wins in this race - Jose Jimenez also won the race three times.

In the heat, the riders battled their way through the 160.6 km race, at high
speed during the first 100 km of easier road. Saeco controlled the race early on
and brought back any attacks, but at km 40 a group of 20 escaped; the group
included Danilo Di Luca (Saeco), Flecha of iBanesto.com and Bayarri of Phonak.
The break had 3 Euskaltel, 3 Ibanesto.com, 2 Kelme, 2 ONCE, 2 Colchón Relax, 2
Vini-Caldirola, and one each from Phonak, Marlux, Paternina and Labarca2.
The escapees are joined by two more and hold the gap at between 1 and 1:45
minutes for 30 kms, but are absorbed by around 80 km. Then another 9 made a
break: Ivan Parra, Joseba Zubeldia, Xabier Zandio, Jonathan González, Alberto
Hierro, Domingo Sánchez, Andrea Tonti, Gonzalo Bayarri and Marco Gili, who gain
about 45 seconds before Saeco and Euskaltel up the pace to rein them in.
At km 130, Sevilla and Arrizabalaga attacked, gaining about twenty seconds
but were quickly reabsorbed by the peloton with Banesto at the head of affairs.
At the beginning of the first climbs (one of two culminating at the Sanctuary
of San Antonio), the race was back together. Today's race saw numerous attacks
always brought under control by Euskaltel and Banesto. Piepoli and Bruylandts
managed to escape in the final kms, followed by Zubeldia. Piepoli passed
Bruylandts in the final 500 meters to win again.

Nuno Ribeiro (LA Pecol) took a magnificient win in today's Stage 5, a long
and nasty stage, 206 km, with a profile that just went up and did not stop. The
same could be said about Ribiero, who also took the leader's jersey away from
Victoriano Fernandez.

A "mini-squad" of sixteen formed by km 30, and the race was high speed (first
hour of racing covered 44.8 km), The escapees gained 13 minutes on the peloton
by km 100 but it was certain not to last when the road began seriously upward.
Once the climbing began, the fuyards' lead dwindled to 2:48. Ivalio Gabrovski
and Gustavo Veloso went off the front of the escapees and Veloso rode alone
until his escapee squad caught up with him. From this point, Nuno Rubiero
attacked and managed to stay away for the balance of the race, finishing one
minute and 20 seconds in front of his closest chaser, David Blanco of Ravessa.
Ribiero's good time today boosted him into top GC spot; Ravessa and Milaneza dominate the GC, Ravessa with two riders, and Milaneza with three in the top ten.

Zoulfia Zabirova, of the aptly named Road Runner Guerciotti team, took
today's stage, though race leader Somarriba easily controlled all attacks made
her arch rival on GC, Fabiana Luperini. Somarriba has now maintained her 2:01 GC
lead for three days and has been in yellow since Stage 4.
