FANTASY SPRING: Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Virtual Teams Results and GC

1st FABIO'S FANTASY SPRING: Race #4 -
"FANTASY LIEGE BASTOGNE-LIEGE"
- FINAL RESULTS

THE DUMP KINGS ... NOT DOWN IN THE DUMPS: Definitely not. That shouldn't be the situation of "The Dump Kings" (winning team of the Fantasy LBL"), neither of their Team Manager, Paul Rentz from the U.S.A.

In a race marked by quite low scores (at least if compared to all previous legs of the game) and more than 20 Virtual Teams unable to score a single point, mainly due to the surprising results of riders like Codol, Kessler and Stefano Garzelli himself, while favorites Rebellin and Casagrande dispappointed a bit (and America's favorites Armstrong and Hincapie were out of the TOP 15 places), just three winning choices (winner Bettini, third place getter Basso and the Fassa-Bortolo Trade Team) were enough to give Mr. Rentz the "Virtual LBL Title", ahead of two non-Americans: David Holm from Denmark (whose "Giorgino" team scored 102 points, courtesy of Bettini, Mapei-Quick Step and Vinokourov) and Rabun Kosar from Turkey, who got the same score as Mr. Holm, with the same 2 riders and Mapei Trade Team too, but ranked third only, due to the tie-breaking rules, as the "Giorgino" squad was sent before Rabun Kosar's "Team123".

A very tight battle for race victory, with Rentz "outsprinting" the other two "breakaway mates". Fourth placed, more than 20 points behind the three "escapees", was Phil Fink from the U.S., with fifth place going to another European, Moritz Mehlem from Germany. Four More Americans and a Puertorican (Fantasy Spring "veteran" Josué Nazario) completed the Top 10.

Dutchman Remo Kaasenbrood, overall leader after the "Virtual Paris-Roubaix", had quite a poor performance this time, as his "San Remo" virtual team got only 30 points - thanks to Mapei-Quick Step, no point scoming from the riders ... while NYC's David Rose (third overall after 3 races) didn't perform any bette, as he unfortunately earned 5 points only. Quite a good performance for the "Best Team Name Award" winner, Mo Ball from the U.K., who ranked 28th and scored 44 points. Rajvinder Singh (Singapore) won for the second time in a row the All-Asian match against Andre Umali (Philippines)

As for "family matches", both Judie and John Driscoll got 24 points, but Judie "won" thanks to the tie-break rules (available in the "Rules" page of the "Fantasy Games" section), and women's supremacy inside families was confirmed by Janna Trevisanut, beating Vaughn Trevisanut with a 6-0 score. A very bad day for Aussies, as both teams from OZ finished at the bottom of the ranking. Hope they may do better in the next race (the fifth and final leg of the contest, namely "Fantasy Amstel Gold Race") to come next week.

One teams has not been accepted as the riders were not selected according to the rules. Others had nonstarters replaced by reserves. Others again played with a lesser number of riders as some of their first choices didn't took the start, and there were no (or not enough) reserve riders in the teams. One team had a "B" rider (Once's Serrano) mistakenly chosen as a "C". Of course he was not accepted and consequently replaced by a "C" reserve (Jaksche). Of course the team didn't gain the 7 Serrano's points.

Virtual teams OVERALL RANKINGS (both the "OFFICIAL" one for teams competing for Overall win and the "unofficial" for teams who didn't register for the first race of the game) coming later on this page .... Time for RESULTS NOW !!!

1st FABIO'S FANTASY SPRING: OVERALL RANKINGS AFTER Race #4 - ("VIRTUAL LIEGE-BASTOGNE-LIEGE")

Despite the second American "stage victory" out of 4 legs, the European domination of the contest continues, and even grows. Indeed, after 4 races, now we have an All-European podium, although with a brand new leader: David Holm from Denmark, and his "Giorgino" Virtual Team, took over the Game Leadership from The Netherlands' Remo Kaasenbrood, currently third and 34 points down on GC.

A Danish leadership should be no surprise at all anyway, as contenders from that cycling-loving country have a "tradition" (if we may call it this way ...) as participants in several cycling Fantasy Games, and with good results too. The same for Holland, the country where not only mr. Kaasenbrood, but the first winner of Fabio's Fantasy games (Jan Dijkstra, Champion of the 2001 Fantasy Tour) come from.

A little more amazing instead is having a Turkish contender (Rabun Kosar) in second place: his Team 123 is only 25 points down to the leader on GC, and may have serious chances to become the Overall Champin after next Sunday's final stage (although it has NEVER done better than "Girgino" in all 4 races so far disputed). That would be an extremely big surprise. I've been watching Turkish Satellite TVs for many a year and, as to sports, I just heard talking of "Cim Bom" and "Fenerli" (and Besiktas of course ... perhaps many of you don't know any of the football things I'm talking about, but Turks certainly do ...) and Basketball too, but NEVER cycling. So it is a very pleasant surprise to see there are true cycling fans and experts in Turkey too.

But we'd better not forget about the Americans: although the low scores got by most teams in LBL could make you think this race had a relatively low impact on the ranking, all TOP 3 teams of LBL are in the TOP 4 places overall. Indeed, LBL winner Paul Rentz is now in fourth spot, leading a strong bunch of American chasers, also including Chuck Hudak and former third placed David Rose, who still may have their say in the final Ranking. The same for a Canadian, Matt Guse, while Ireland-based Belgian Cèline Tygadt got out of the TOP 10 (a very bad day for her, who also saw her Belgian favorite riders defeated by Italians in the real LBL)

Puerto Rico's Josué Nazario lost ninth place Overall and dropped to twelfth, while former Overall Leader Andre Umali is now 23th only, also behind the winner of the previous Fabio's Fantasy Game (the Fantasy Worlds held in October 2001), namely Joe Coughlin from Chicago.

The currently best-placed contender among those who participated to Race #1 only remains Christine from Germany, with 93 points earned in MSR. Don't forget that all 135 vitrual teams who registered for Milan-San Remo still can compete for the overall victory.

The numbers in brackets refer to the points scored by each participant in every single race: Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège respectively.

42 more participants (including 5 brand new additions in LBL) did not enter their team for Milan-San Remo and consequently can't compete for the "Fantasy Spring" overall victory. But nonetheless they took part in the following races of the games, competing at least for "stage victory", and that's what American Les Nadon got in the "Virtual Tour of Flanders" (Les couldn't repeat the same performance in today's race though).

So, just in order to to satisfy your curiosity, here are the TOTAL SCORES of each of the 42 participants "officially out of competition". The number in brackets is referring to the numbers of Fantasy Spring races they took part in.

There's a European leader in this ranking too as, despite not scoring any point in LBL, Alex Ball of Doncaster (England) remains at the top of the ranking; but the situation in the very first places of the "unofficial" classification is very tight, with Eric Nordsieck from the U.S. closing to the leader. And, just like in the "official" standings, only one contender from the U.S. in the Top 5, with a Dutchman in third place (again, just like in the other ranking), followed by a Puertorican and another member of the Ball family, Mo Ball. Unfortunate debut for Jean Paradis and Tim Kenington, who didn't score any points. Hope they may have a better result in next Sunday's final race (Amstel Gold Race).
