After two days marked by all-European wins, Floridian Matthew Stevens took the U.S. back to the top of the podium in the last ITT. Jan Ullrich's crash over the the slippery roads of Brittany in such a rainy day was the turning point of the stage. With the German out of contention even for a daily success, and Armstrong slowing it down a bit in order not to take any unnecessary risks, David Millar could finally grab a victory he deserved since the Prologue, when only a chain that got caught between the chainrings prevented the Scotsman from taking the first yellow jersey in the Centenary Tour. But redemption day came three weeks later, and several players who picked the Cofidis rider were certainly glad.

Even more in case they picked Millar's French Trade Team too. And that's exactly Stevens' case: the American got points from the same riders as Denise Francisco ("Superstar Roadies of the Philippines"), namely Millar, Armstrong, Hungary's Bodrogi (finally back into spotlight) and Baden Cooke. But it was the "Trade Team factor" that made the gap: whereas Stevens got 8 points from the stage winner's team, Denise Francisco earned just six from Armstrong's squad, and subsequently lost the stage to "Team Ornitorrinco", that got its first victory in the DP's Fantasy Games.

"Superstar Roadies of the Philippines" couldn't claim victory, but took the Asian country back onto the podium after Raymond Tiangco's win (in a "virtual tandem" with Germany's Christine, not playing this game) in a Fantasy World Championships leg this past Autumn. Another Filipino, Andre "Manghuhula" Umali, clinched the "Fantasy Milano-Sanremo" in March 2002.

Another American, Robert Smiely, can finally "smile" as his "sorriso" ("smile" in Italian) hit the podium too. Millar, Armstrong & Cofidis were part of his Team roster, but "Ekimov & Vinokourov" combination of former Soviet riders provided him with less points than Stevens got from Bodrogi and Cooke. Neverthless Smiely managed to "outsprint" Sharon Sharp (that got points from both of her Trade teams Cofidis and CSC, plus Millar and Armstrong, but only just three more from Cooke) by a 1-point margin and prevent her from taking another podium spot, after Sharp's second placing in Stage 10.

Six more US-based players, including Panaman-American Manny Samaniego (that will likely win his daily match in the Fantasy League) and previous stage winner David Baer follow, all of them with points from both Millar and Armstrong. All but Ron Morris, whose "Lucky Guess" in the "A" Category was 20-point provider Tyler Hamilton.

Another player that got a huge help from bot Millar and L.A. was yellow jersey "wearer" Andrew Titman. The Brit got 66 points and placed 12th in the stage; not bad at all. Friday's winner Aurélien Delaurent had another good result, while 2002 Fantasy Tour Champion Mike Barker, who is about give up the title he took last year, snatched 28th. Once more ALL competitors got at least one stage point, while the Tie-breaking Rules were applied to the Top 50 Virtual Teams in the Stage Classification only.

On Saturday, under the French rain, some of his best picks gave "MayoNazon" exactly what the man and his Virtual Team needed: a sensational score of 66 points (Millar 30, Armstrong 25, Cooke 3, Vinokourov 2, USPS 6), 30 more than his Millar-less main challenger Jan Dijkstra got, such that Titman could more than double his lead over "Sprints by Spurts". The gap has extended to 59 points, and the Dutch runner-up could bridge it only in the very unlikely (to say the least) event Brochard, Edaleine and Pascual Llorente (figuring in his own Virtual Team but not Titman's) may take the Top 3 Places in the final stage.

If the case for first place is (almost) closed, the same can't be said for the podium spots. The battle for third place is still wide open. Gavin Linnett retained his position even after Saturday's leg, while Silvia Harper lost one place as David Millar's great result allowed Moritz Kufferath to move up four spots iinto 4th overall, currently with a 12-point lead over the best American.

But the "Points awarded at the end of the Tour" factor could give Harper a fundamental help: Vinokourov's third placing in the TdF Final Standings might earn "Team Jajoni" 23 decisive points and a podium spot, while both "Khumbaya" and "KuffiCyclers" could pay for the absence of the Kazakh in their respective rosters. On the other side, Oscar Freire could finally find his legs at the Champs and get a good result in the last sprint, saving Linnett's podium spot. Also the other sprinter in his roster, Jean-Patrick Nazon, Might play his part in the first drive for a podium spot of an African contender.

Right behind the "Fab Five" there's a tie, with three different players at 885 points: thanks to the Tie-breaking Rules, Jim Klepper retained his sixth place, but could eventually lose it to Robert "Vinyard" Haas (who at his turn lost two places on Saturday) and/or fellow American Amber McFarlane, back into the Top 10 overall six days later, as she gained eight places thanks to David Millar's triumph. "Hairy carpet" also took 16th in the Stage Classification.

Good news for her, not so good for "G.B. Van Gelderen", whose "Robasco" Virtual Team lost two places in the penultimate day. Nigel Ravenhill moved one spot down too, with three more Americans (Al Alvares, Scott Cairns and Frank A. Mogavero) closely following, ready to find a place in the final Top 10.

Also Chris Tunnock benefitted from David Millar's stage success and regained the "best-placed Aussie" status, besides moving up ten places into fourteenth. With two great performances in the last two days, Aurélien Delaurent made impressive gains in the GC, such that "Hautacam" is currently sitting in 15th place (better than Virenque in the real TdF!).

On the other side, Tim Oh, Niko Hinz and Matthias Jünemann lost a few places on Saturday. So did DP's writer Patrick "Locutus" Sharp and Tony Tullio, who still is the best-placed Canadian anyway, one point clear of "Denmark's best", Martin Kristensen.

More news from the GC: Harm Hanemaayer lost some more spots but is in a very honorable 29th placing, and remains the best Armstrong-less player (followed by Betsy Baker and Walt Armstrong in this "special classification"). Stage winner Matthew Stevens moved up into 66th overall, with also Saturday's runner-up Denise Francisco able to break into the Top 100 places. Robert Smiley is 168th instead.

Denmark's Jakob Duma and Rene Strandberg keep going "hand in hand" with the same score (662 points) and the Tie-breaking Rules so far awarding a better placing to the former. Sixty points behind there's another tie worthy of a mention, between Germany's Moritz Mehlem and Ralf Heeg. Laura Fronhofer is doing quite well (she's sitting in 83th place overall), but it seems she has wasted her (first, as she may be trying again in the next DP's Games) "chance to beat her husband at a game", as Frank Fronhofer is doing even better, currently in spot #36. The "family match" betwen Vaughn and Janna Trevisanut is closer than ever instead, with the latter now leading the former by one point. But Roman Trevisanut and his "totally random" picks are doing much better than both of them.

Last but not least, a glance at the bottom of the bunch, where Alan McFarlane (that got 20 points from Tyler Hamilton) took 2 points out of Tam Ravenhill (18 from Jan Ullrich), but the gap to bridge is still consistent: 36 points.
