Just call it Tour de Dutch. Players from The Netherlands are really making their mark in the first half of the Fantasy Tour Game. On Sunday they got the fourth victory in nine days, and climbed a stage podium for the sixth time. After the "first times" for Harm Hanemaayer and Teun Parrel, and G.B. Van Gelderen's podium placing, we saw a great comeback: Jan Dijkstra, first-ever overall winner in the DP's Fantasy games, was back to ancient glory and dominated the Alpe D'Huez stage, two years after his triumph in the 1st Fabio's Fantasy Tour Game (2001 edition).

With the likes of Iban Mayo (providing 32 points), Lance Armstrong (27), Kazakhstan's Vinokourov (20), ONCE's Joseba Beloki (13) and the USPS Trade Team (6) in the roster Mr. Dijkstra, who also won the ultimate leg of the 2001 Fantasy TdF (but that was a "shared" victory with Italy's Francesco Grandi), could hardly fail to claim the stage. But those were also the picks of another player, Germany's Bernd Angenendt, who entered his Virtual Team before his Dutch rival.

Such that, although it may seem paradoxical, the decisive rider in the Alpe d'Huez stage turned out to be a pure sprinter, Australian Baden Cooke, whose presence in the "Sprints by Spurts" squad earned Dijkstra six fundamental points and Stage 8 victory. Quite curiously, in the 2001 Fantasy Tour Game Dijkstra took the overall leadership (which he never relinquished) after the stage finishing into the same Alpe d'Huez (then dominated by Armstrong though). Just call it Alpe de Jan ...

Also American Alex Parker, who got the same score as Angenendt, picked Cooke as one of his three "C" men, but in this case it was the absence of points from the US Postal squad that prevented "GS Velocite" from taking the stage, and even denied Parker the runner-up spot, as the Tie-breaking rules awarded it to "Teutenberg connection".

Just outside this multi-national podium came two more U.S. players, Nancy Miano and Phil Trostel, whose Virtual Teams, unlike the previous ones, featured Spaniards like Zubeldia (in Miano's case) and Mancebo (Trostel) but not Vinokourov. Thanks to one, decisive point from 2002 Giro podium finisher Caucchioli, Andrea Grandi took Italy in a stage Top 10 at last.

Just Seven players were unable to earn any stage points. Of course the Tie-breaking rules were applied to the Top 50 Virtual Teams in the Stage Classification only.

Despite getting just 16 points, by far their lowest score since the game got underway (points courtesy of the Top 3 riders in the Points Ranking, Hushovd, Cooke, and McEwen, plus LA's USPS Trade Team) "The Visitors" kept their main rivals at bay. American Walt Armstrong got the same score, thanks to the same picks, and the gap between the Top 2 players remained the same.

And in spite of their low scores, something you may expect from sprinter-studded Virtual Teams in a mountain stage, both Hans Jacob Hofgaard (15 stage points) and Jaume Buqueras (12 points, half of which from Cooke, the rest from the Posties) kept their positions too. But in the Game's economy, the biggest winner of the day was probably South African Gavin Linnett. The "Khumbaya" Virtual Team got no less than 71 stage points and moved up five places into fifth overall, just 8 points down to Buqueras, throwing Hans Tveitereid out of the Top 5 after many days. And with the likes of Mayo and Armstrong (plus Cooke and USPS) in his team roster, Gavin Linnett may be well-entitled to think big when looking at coming stages.

Another Dutch competitor, G.B. Van Gelderen, retained sixth place overall as he moved ahead of Tveitereid too, but is now behind Linnett. Besides "Pommes de Couch", two more American teams are in the Top 10: "frankamo's", that lost one place though, and Amber McFarlane's "Hairy carpet", back into the top places thanks to points from Armstrong, Beloki, Cooke and USPS.

Stage winner Jan Dikstra made some gains, but is currently sitting in 55th place only. But also two years ago he started his road towards overall victory at L'Alpe d'Huez. Will history repeat itself ? Time will tell. For the moment, he's well ahead of Bernd Angenendt and Alex Parker anyway, as despite their excellent stage performances both guys stay in the second half of the GC.

Big news more down in the Ranking: Chuck Wilkins is no longer at the bottom of the table: with a help from Vinokourov, Beloki and Tyler Hamilton, "smokes, beer & steel cable" handed the "Lanterne Rouge" over to another American, Tam Ravenhill, currently trailing three points behind Britain's Alan McFarlane.
